Discover Kornatice: nature trails, cycling routes and village history

Kornatice combines easy walks, signposted cycling routes and visible traces of village history. For families with children, the “Okolím Kornatic” nature trail is particularly suitable: it is designed as an easy walk around Kornatice, follows a circular route that takes relatively little time, includes eight stops, and combines information panels with practical tasks. The trail starts at the cultural centre in Kornatice. This makes it possible to begin a stay with a manageable discovery tour without focusing solely on a single viewpoint.

Nature trails between natural and cultural history

The F. X. France nature trail offers a different perspective. It introduces visitors to prehistoric and medieval remains in the former cultural landscape. One of its special features is a preserved section of a medieval cart road. The trail was extended in 2013 and has ended in Kornatice ever since; its endpoint is at Kornatice railway station. Boardwalks and rest areas are also part of this trail. This makes it possible to discover the village’s history not only through individual buildings, but also through preserved traces of former routes and settlement areas.

Cycling with Kornatice as a stopover

For a cycling trip, signposted Route 2039 provides a clearly described connection: it runs from Šťáhlavy through Kornatice, Mešno and Lipnice to Spálené Poříčí. In addition, a link between two cycling routes runs directly through Kornatice. Those who primarily want to combine cycling with historical discoveries when choosing accommodation can consider this route as an important difference from a stay focused solely on walking. The location is defined by specific routes, not merely by a general promise of leisure activities.

Chapel, pond and preserved traces

The village is home to the Kornatice Chapel, the oldest building in the village. Its exact age has not yet been determined. The chapel and the monument to the inhabitants who fell in the First World War are surrounded by hundred-year-old lime trees. Veský Pond is also located directly on the outskirts of Kornatice. In the surrounding area, a 130-metre section of the historic access road to Lopata Castle has been preserved. The remains of the medieval village of Javor are also located near Kornatice: they appear as slightly raised, hill-like structures and shallow depressions near small water reservoirs. These places show that the surrounding area offers interesting destinations even when visitors are not looking exclusively for a traditional landmark.

Village traditions throughout the year

The local events calendar includes Masopust, which the municipality of Kornatice organises every year together with Sdružení pro Kornatice. A masked procession with music moves through the village and visits the houses after first asking the mayor for permission. Another regular event is Slet čarodějnic, held every year on 30 April. The programme includes a costume procession through the village, a ritual around the bonfire and refreshments.

The municipality also organises the Kornatické slavnosti every year. The Slavnosti léta include changing exhibitions, some of which are also offered for sale, as well as displays of historic bicycles with participants wearing period costumes. In this way, the annual events complement the trails and architectural heritage with living forms of local culture.

Which accommodation location suits your plans

When looking for accommodation in Kornatice, you can therefore first decide on your preferred combination: the easy circular trail with stops and tasks is ideal for a straightforward outing with children, while the F. X. France nature trail, Route 2039 and the link between two cycling routes are better suited to active days focused on cultural history. The chapel, lime trees, Veský Pond and the traces of Lopata and Javor add destinations with historical or scenic significance to this selection. For further location options, you can also consider Chomle, Podmokly, Smědčice, Strašice, Osek, Raková, Pavlovsko and Zvikovec.
