Discover Vračovice-Orlov

Vračovice-Orlov combines remarkable evidence of rural cultural history with a pond landscape and a marked cycling route. Particularly interesting is the contrast between historic buildings whose details date back to the 13th and 16th centuries and the pond system between Vračovice-Orlov and Zálší, which is considered a breeding ground for waterfowl. The core of the single-nave Church of St. John the Baptist in Vračovice-Orlov is a late Romanesque structure dating from around the 13th century and listed as a cultural monument. The term “single-nave” describes the simple, clearly organized basic layout of the church; together with the late Romanesque building fabric, it points to a long history of development. The church is a subsidiary church of the Roman Catholic parish of České Heřmanice.

The Church of St. John the Baptist complex is located in a cemetery enclosed by a wall. It also includes a mortuary chapel from the first half of the 19th century. The cemetery preserves a special memorial site as well: it contains the grave of victims of the Second World War, bearing the names Harry Ward and James Hall, both soldiers in the British Army, as well as an unknown Russian soldier. These various elements make the site notable not only for its church architecture but also for its layers of history.

Insights into rural architecture

A second cultural monument is rural house No. 2 in Vračovice. The building documents the development of settlement architecture since the 16th century, complementing the ecclesiastical historical perspective with the history of everyday housing. The house includes an old log room with a so-called smoke room, known in Czech as “dymná jizba.”

The smoke room was the main room of the house. It had an open hearth and smoke openings above the windows. Those interested in regional building forms will therefore find in Vračovice-Orlov not just a single old building but also a specific indication of the development of earlier settlement and housing conditions.

Ponds and cycling route

Between Vračovice-Orlov and Zálší lies a pond system that is considered an important landscape feature and a breeding ground for waterfowl. One active option is the “Krajinou rybníků” cycling route. It follows marked Cycle Route 182 via Vračovice-Orlov. The Sloupnice–Chotěšiny–Vračovice–Zálší section is listed as 7.7 km. The 7.7 km refers to this section and not automatically to the entire cycling route.
