Cultural history and wetlands in Karviná District

Karviná District reveals a region where early medieval history, historic townscapes and protected river landscapes offer a variety of travel experiences. Chotěbuz-Podobora is particularly impressive: the site is one of the most important prehistoric and early medieval monuments in Cieszyn Silesia. At the Archaeopark, life in an early medieval hillfort is presented interactively. The Archaeopark includes reconstructed fortifications, replicas of period dwellings and production buildings.

The visit begins with a special approach: a footbridge leads through the treetops to the hillfort. The Archaeopark can be reached by train, bus, car or bicycle. Cycle Route 6257 also runs past the Archaeopark along the Olše and Odra rivers.

Karviná between the castle, urban history and park

Several different facets of the region’s history come together in Karviná. Fryštát Castle has been open to the public since 1997. Guided tours take you through furnished rooms in the main building and the Lotty House. The castle is considered a notable example of the region’s Empire-style cultural heritage. Karviná’s historical heritage map offers a broader view of the past: it describes 35 places connected with the history of the vanished city.

The historic Masaryk Square is also a useful place to visit during a stay. There you will find cafés, restaurants, a pastry shop, a tearoom and options for a quick snack. The Leaning Church of St Peter of Alcantara holds services regularly on Sundays and, by arrangement, offers organised group tours with explanations. The Life Tragedy memorial can be visited by prior arrangement.

Kotulova dřevěnka in Havířov offers another view of the region’s past. The wooden house was built in 1781 and is the last surviving testimony to the original settlement of present-day Havířov. Inside, domestic life in Cieszyn Silesia around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is presented. In this way, large-scale historic sites are complemented by a tangible testimony to everyday life.

Rivers, wetlands and paths through nature

Karviná District offers several protected landscapes for nature experiences. The Hraniční meandry Odry reserve protects around 7 km of the meandering Odra River on the Czech-Polish border. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Heřmanský stav–Odra–Poolší bird protection area. Karviná-rybníky is also included in Natura 2000 and provides a habitat for the hermit beetle. Notable waterbirds occur in the Skučák area, including great crested grebes and several duck species.

The Těrlické mokřady educational trail offers a clearly defined hiking experience. It is 2.5 km long and follows the Stonávka River through floodplain forest and wetlands. Anyone wishing to combine exercise and relaxation will find sports facilities, quiet areas, boat trips and fishing opportunities at the Loděnice recreation area on a side arm of the Olše.

Boženy Němcové Park, laid out in the English style, was founded in 1804 and covers 36 hectares. Cycling, skating, boating, fishing and walking are possible there. Seasonal carriage rides pass through the park; longer rides continue as far as Lázeňský Park. The various landscapes and historic sites allow you to balance your stay between culture, water and nature observation.
