Sorela and the city’s distinctive character

Sorela is the protected zone designated in 1992 around Havířov’s center, built in the 1950s in the style of Socialist Realism. The protected zone comprises a complex of residential buildings bordered on one side by Stromovka Forest Park and extending on the other side to the meanders of the Lučina. This spatial connection makes Sorela an unusual starting point for experiencing the city’s architecture and landscape as part of one coherent setting.

The Lučina Meanders also make a strong impression. This protected natural monument stretches for approximately 2.5 kilometers and covers a total area of 40.7 hectares. It comprises a naturally meandering watercourse with adjoining wetlands and alluvial forests that provide habitats for protected animal species. Those who value proximity to nature and varied surroundings when choosing accommodation will find a clearly distinctive landscape here, without Havířov being reduced to its urban history.

History that remains visible in Havířov

An important memorial site is the Památník životické tragédie. It houses a permanent exhibition of the Museum of the Těšín Region entitled “Occupation and Resistance in the Těšín Region 1938–1945.” The Památník životické tragédie commemorates the 36 men who were killed on August 6, 1944, during a Nazi reprisal action. A visit is possible by prior arrangement; this information should therefore be explicitly included when planning a cultural day.

The Kotulova dřevěnka offers another perspective on the region’s past. It is one of the oldest traditional wooden buildings in Těšín Silesia and the last surviving evidence of the original development in the area of today’s Havířov. Since 1979, it has housed an exhibition on rural living around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Together with Havířov Castle, which was ceremonially opened to the public on January 10, 1998, it creates a broad spectrum of historical topics – from rural building culture to the city’s development.

Experiences for families and varied interests

For families, the centrally located Dětský zábavní park offers climbing frames, swings, sandpits, and other attractions. The facilities can be used by children up to the age of 15, making this a suitable destination for stays with children of different ages. The Havířovské slavnosti also provide a cultural focus: this traditional project of the statutory city of Havířov features a multidisciplinary program, Czech and international music, and a wide range of accompanying entertainment.
