Discover Horní Suchá

Horní Suchá combines an impressive industrial history with places for culture, exercise, and shared discoveries. Highlights include historic buildings, the history of hard-coal mining, sports facilities, and a red-marked hiking trail along the eastern edge of the town. This allows you to shape your stay around very different themes: gaining insight into the region's past, engaging in sporting activities, or following a route across the Darkovský Bridge to Karviná.

Industrial history with preserved details

One particularly vivid example is the Dělnický dům. The building was constructed in two phases: the original structure dates from 1897, while the later courtyard extension was added in 1929. The main hall retains a wooden parquet floor and the stage rigging. This is the technical equipment used to move stage elements. The outdoor terrazzo dance floor, on the other hand, is located in the courtyard. Terrazzo is a type of flooring with stone aggregate embedded in it; at the Dělnický dům, it is located outside the main hall.

Věž František is another prominent reminder of the industrial past. The 85-metre-high reinforced-concrete structure is a technical monument of regional significance. The Důl František hard-coal mine in Horní Suchá was built from 1911 onward. Its active mining history continued until mid-1999: at that time, the last coal wagon left Důl František before the shaft was closed.

Culture, sports, and trails

In addition to its historical attractions, Horní Suchá offers opportunities for an active stay. The Na Císařství Sports and Relaxation Centre has six multi-purpose sports courts for badminton, volleyball, nohejbal, floorball, and futsal. You can reserve the entire sports hall or individual courts. This makes it possible for families or travel groups with different interests to add a sporting activity to their stay without everyone having to choose the same sport.

The František Sports Complex is also part of the town's history. The facility was built in the early 1950s, and football has been played there since 1953. The two sports facilities therefore have clearly different focuses: Na Císařství brings together several indoor sports and bookable courts, while football use documented since 1953 is the main focus at the František Sports Complex.

The Catholic Church of St. Joseph, dating from 1835, offers a different point of interest. Park hrdinů is a memorial site at the location of an execution and adds a more serious historical aspect to exploring Horní Suchá. The church and memorial site complement the area's industrial and sporting history with religious architectural history and a culture of remembrance.

A red-marked hiking trail runs along the eastern edge of Horní Suchá. It leads north across the Darkovský Bridge and through Lázně Darkov to Fryštát Castle in Karviná.
