Educational Trail and Landscape Around Doubrava

The Doubravská educational trail consists of a red and a blue route. At each station, information boards provide maps, descriptions and depictions of points of interest. The boards accompany the routes with orientation and background information about the visible sights. The blue route leads to Doubravský kopec, where there is a covered rest area and a panorama map. In good visibility, the viewpoint offers a view of almost the entire Beskids. This makes it possible to combine a visit to Doubravský kopec with a break at the covered rest area and views of the panorama. Another distinctive landscape feature is Kozinec Lake, the largest body of water in Doubrava. It was formed as a result of ground subsidence caused by coal mining and is now an important breeding area for birds as well as a refuge for protected animal and plant species.

Cultural Monuments and Mining History

The town’s history can also be read in its specific buildings. In the Church of St. Hedwig, a relic of Saint Hedwig is displayed for public veneration. The Husův sbor was built in Doubrava in 1928 by the architect and builder Čeněk Volný. By a decision of the Ministry of Culture dated 15 November 2001, it was declared a cultural monument; its excellent acoustics are used for concerts.

The Doubravská dřevěnka is a rare surviving example of vernacular architecture in the Ostrava–Karviná hard-coal district. Among long-time residents, it is considered Doubrava’s first school. The Národní dům is an important cultural centre where numerous social and cultural events take place. Together, these places create a rich picture of religious tradition, regional architectural history, public cultural life and the industrial past. The industrial past also includes the main shaft of the Důl Doubrava mine: it later became the deepest in the Karviná mining district, while the lowest, tenth level lay at a depth of more than 1,000 metres.
