Discovering the Hraniční meandry Odry actively

The most distinctive nature experience is the Hraniční meandry Odry. This protected natural monument covers an area of 131.6 hectares and preserves a 7.5-kilometre section of the Oder with five large river bends. The landscape can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by boat. It therefore offers different ways of experiencing the river: you can choose a hike, a bike tour or an exploration on the water, without the natural setting being limited to a single activity.

Cycling and architecture on the Červená stezka

Another way to combine exercise and local history is the Červená stezka. It can be travelled by bicycle or walked. It includes twelve Neo-Gothic red-brick buildings in Bohumín. The route therefore represents not only an active excursion, but also leads to a clearly recognisable architectural theme. The facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, a relaxation pool, massage jets, water spouts, a waterfall, an outdoor pool, a 48-metre water slide, a children's paddling pool and other attractions. In addition, the sauna world includes Finnish saunas, a steam sauna, experience showers and a Kneipp path. The Aquacentrum thus adds swimming, water play and sauna visits to the day's activities, while the Oder meanders and the Červená stezka shift the focus outdoors.

Historical discoveries in Starý Bohumín

The cultural attractions are also diverse. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Bohumín dates from the 15th century and became a pilgrimage site again after decades. The Pustyňa Chapel is a small Baroque building from the 18th century. Both examples represent different periods and scales of sacred architecture.

The permanent exhibition “Bohumín - pohledy do minulosti města” is housed in the Městské muzeum, in the basement of the renovated Art Nouveau house Pod Zeleným dubem in Starý Bohumín. The museum also displays the Starý Bohumín treasure, consisting of 54 coins from the years 1660 to 1860. Other exhibits include a mammoth molar, a vertebra and a boundary stone from the period of the First Republic, which were found in the Oder meanders. In this way, the town's history is connected with finds from the river landscape.

Special historical sites

The MO-S5 Na Trati infantry bunker offers regular guided tours at weekends and on public holidays. Outside regular opening hours, visits are possible by telephone appointment. The bunker was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 2004. Another historical feature is the crypt of the Counts Henckel von Donnersmarck: the two-storey building has a crypt in the basement and a sacred space on the upper floor, and was converted into its present form in 1752.
