Karwin – Fryštát Castle, Božena Němcová Park and Culture

Karwin combines castle visits, a protected townscape, parkland, cycling connections and wellness culture. The cultural introduction is provided by Fryštát Castle: the first tour leads through the castle’s main building and includes 18 castle rooms. The first two tours follow a clearly defined visiting format: each is conducted exclusively with a guide and lasts approximately 55 minutes. Independent visits are therefore not the documented format for these two tours.

Castle, Church and Contemporary Art

Outside the castle as well, Karwin displays historical monuments of differing character. The Church of Saint Peter of Alcantara was built in the Baroque style in 1736. In summer, it is open to the public free of charge on weekends; a guide is also available. This makes it possible to combine a church visit with a specific insight into its architectural history, rather than treating the sacred site merely as an exterior viewing point.

A different cultural direction is represented by the Karviná City Gallery. It presents contemporary visual art and is open to the public during ongoing exhibitions. Historic sacred architecture, castle interiors and contemporary art thus provide three clearly distinct approaches to the city’s history and present-day cultural life.

Parkland and Protected Townscape

The original castle park of Fryštát is now called Božena Němcová Park. It was laid out in the English style after the Empire renovation of the castle in 1804 and covers 36 hectares. Its historic design is complemented by distinctive trees: tree-lined avenues, rare specimen trees and notable trees have been preserved, including a two-lobed ginkgo, a common ash and a London plane.

Like the historic town centre and Lázeňský Park, Božena Němcová Park forms part of Karviná’s urban heritage conservation zone. The Zoo Corner is also located next to the castle. In an enclosure with rare trees, fallow deer and red deer live alongside peacocks and waterfowl. Around the castle and park, historic garden architecture, protected urban areas and observable wildlife therefore stand side by side.

Discover Karwin by Bicycle

The documented cycling routes offer different ways to explore the area actively. From Cycling Route 6257, you can turn in Darkov via the Sokolovských hrdinů concrete arch bridge onto Lázeňská Street. This leads to the square in Karviná’s historic centre. Regional Cycling Route 6097 runs from Těrlicko through Stonava and Karviná; within the city, information signs point to Božena Němcová Castle Park and Fryštát Castle.

Lázně Darkov and Recreation

At Lázně Darkov, the special natural resource of iodine-bromine mineral water is at the centre. Regeneration centres and the Svět vitality facility for recreation and wellness have been established there. Together with the castle, parks, gallery and cycling routes, this area broadens the range of possible focuses for a stay with a facet explicitly oriented towards recreation.
