Cvikov between Rock Landscapes and Cultural Monuments

Cvikov combines protected nature, historic buildings and paths leading to distinctive landscape sites. A prominent cultural monument is the Church of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary. Its original Gothic structure was converted into a three-nave church by Benedikt Ferrvi between 1553 and 1558. Its present appearance is the result of the Baroque renovation carried out from 1726 to 1728 according to a design by Prague architect Václav Špaček; it has been protected as a monument since 3 May 1958.

Natural Monuments and Landscape

Part of the Cvikov area belongs to the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area, designated in 1976. The protected landscape includes, among other areas, part of the Cvikov cadastral district as well as the entire cadastral districts of Trávník u Cvikova and Naděje. The Dutý kámen Natural Monument is located in the cadastral districts of Drnovec and the adjacent Kunratice u Cvikova. Designated in 1963, the sandstone ridge covers 6.63 hectares and features columnar and slab-like jointing.

Other notable natural destinations include the Naděje Natural Monument and the Schillerova vyhlídka viewpoint. Naděje is a fissure cave with pseudokarst features in a scree field on the northern slope of Suchý vrch, near the Naděje reservoir; the natural monument was designated in 1966 and covers 0.75 hectares. Schillerova vyhlídka has been preserved despite trees partially overgrowing it. From there, views extend over the surroundings of Mařenice as well as Luže, Hvozd and Jezevčí vrch. Several ponds, including Cvikovský, Třeťák and Veselák, are used for fish farming and recreation.

Trails, History and Excursions

For orientation based on interests, Cvikov offers a red walking trail to the town’s monuments and a green hiking trail passing rock viewpoints, rock cities and rock reliefs in the surrounding area. The Křížová cesta–Kalvárie complex on Křížový vrch dates back to 1730. The original wooden Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre was replaced by a stone building in 1847, while the Stations of the Cross date from the end of the 19th century. The first religious sculptures of the Stations of the Cross were installed in 1729 on the rocky basalt summit of Křížový vrch (Kalvárie).

The town’s history also includes the Marian Column, erected in 1697 and moved in 1995 from its original location near the town mill on Mlýnská Street to the church, as well as Niessnerova vila. It was the family residence of textile factory owner Josef Niessner and is a historicist building in the Alpine style with original Art Nouveau interiors preserved. In 2017, proceedings began to declare it a national cultural monument.

Brewing Tradition and Practical Information

At the foot of the Lužické hory, Pivovar Cvikov is credited with a brewing tradition dating back to 1560. After closing in 1968, the craft brewery resumed operations in 2014 following extensive reconstruction. Traditional bottom-fermented beers mature in original stone cellars: the pale lager Klíč with 12% malt extract, as well as Luž with 10% and Sklář with 8%. The guided tour lasts approximately 40 minutes, explains the entire beer production process and includes a tasting. It is available for groups of 10 or more, but must be arranged and booked in advance.

Tourist information boards with maps, QR codes linking to digital information and printed materials at the information centre make it easier to find your way independently. In summer, you can also use the Horský expres for a full-day excursion from Cvikov to the German towns of Jonsdorf and Oybin.
