Discover Horní Libchava: Trails, Nature and History

Horní Libchava combines traces of history with a network of cycling and hiking trails as well as protected landscapes. The village is therefore an interesting choice for planning your trip if you do not want to consider active days, nature observation and culture separately. The surrounding area offers various possibilities without requiring you to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.

Cycling and Hiking Around Horní Libchava

Cycle Route No. 211 runs through Horní Libchava and connects Kytlice, Dubá, Stružnice, Horní Libchava and Vojtěchov. Another distinctive feature is the Varhany cycle route. It connects Česká Lípa, Horní Libchava and Kamenický Šenov and runs along the former railway bed of a railway line. The railway’s former route is therefore a defining feature of this route.

The area can also be explored on foot via several marked connections. A blue-marked hiking trail runs along the northeastern edge of Horní Libchava and leads from Česká Lípa via Manušice, Slunečná and Kamenický Šenov to Nový Bor. In addition, a yellow hiking and cycling route passes through Horní Libchava and connects Česká Lípa, Dolní Libchava, Horní Libchava, Manušice, Skalice u České Lípy and Nový Bor. Wetlands, Mountains and Recreational Landscapes

The Manušické rybníky ponds are a distinctive natural feature. The nature monument includes areas in the cadastral district of Horní Libchava and protects wetland and aquatic biotopes as well as the species dependent on them. A population of fire-bellied toads (Bombina bombina) is given particular emphasis. The area is therefore significant not only for its landscape but also for the habitats preserved there.

The Lusatian Mountains north of Horní Libchava provide a further geographical point of reference. The northern part of the Bohemian Central Highlands begins to the west, while the area around Máchovo jezero is nearby to the southeast. In addition, the former Ralsko military area in the vicinity of Horní Libchava is now a recreational area. These connections point to various landscapes that may play a role when choosing the focus of your holiday.

Castle, Castle Ruins and Local History

The Renaissance Horní Libchava Chateau dates from 1574 to 1593 and provides a clear historical focal point in the village. Another form of history can be encountered at the vanished Klinštejn castle complex. It dates from the 14th century; no above-ground masonry has survived. However, an outer defensive ditch and rampart remain visible. This contrast between a castle that no longer stands and its surviving traces in the terrain makes the site a destination for travellers interested in historical connections, including those reflected in less fully preserved structures.

The local history also includes the cemetery, which was established in 1904 on the site of the former cemetery. The earlier cemetery surrounded the Church of St James the Elder in the village centre. The representative Fara maltézských rytířů follows the traditional floor plan of a broad Baroque house and adds an example of Baroque architecture to the historical character of the village.
