Teschwitz: Half-timbered houses, the Ohře and a medieval stone cross

Riverside setting and village character

Teschwitz (Těšovice) lies on the right bank of the Ohře. The character of the village is also defined by the small, so-called Těšovice Waterfall. Here, a riverside setting and a small natural feature meet a remarkable rural architectural and settlement history. Half-timbered houses between the 18th and 19th centuries

Several half-timbered houses have been preserved in Těšovice. The historic structure is particularly evident in the enclosed farm complex No. 9: it dates from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The complex is a typical four-sided farmyard, or a Franconian house with a four-sided layout. The term describes a farm complex that encloses the inner area on four sides. This makes the farm complex an illustrative introduction to a rural architectural form, without limiting yourself to simply viewing the village as a whole.

The buildings of the so-called Těšovice castle seat are also among the characteristic examples of the local built heritage. They are valuable examples of vernacular half-timbered architecture from the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. Together with farm complex No. 9, they create a nuanced picture of how strongly half-timbered construction shapes the traditional appearance of Těšovice.

Two architectural focal points therefore stand out when considering the village: the enclosed farm complex No. 9 with its four-sided layout, and the castle-seat buildings as examples of vernacular half-timbered architecture. The farm complex draws attention to the arrangement of the courtyard, while the castle-seat buildings show the half-timbered tradition across several structures. Both examples date from a similar historical period and highlight different aspects of rural architectural culture.

Stone cross and traces of history

An unusual discovery lies in a hollow along the former field road to Staré Sedlo. Near the former isolated settlement of Na Kopci, about 250 metres south of the summit of Těšovický vrch, stands an approximately one-metre-high medieval stone cross. The cross is reinforced with four irregular ribs and bears a small engraved cross at its centre.

A boundary stone belonging to the Nostitz estate also stands near the small, so-called Těšovice Waterfall. An anchor is engraved in the stone; it forms part of the Nostitz coat of arms. Details like these give an exploration of the village a historical focus that extends beyond the larger structures.

Bridge and marked hiking trail

A suspension bridge for pedestrians and cyclists connects Těšovice with Královské Poříčí across the Ohře. A green-marked hiking trail also passes through Těšovice. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between different ways of getting around: the bridge provides a crossing over the river, while the marked trail identifies the village as part of a hiking route.
