Lanz – Cultural History, Landscape and Cycle Route 2044

St. Giles: Architectural History from Several Periods

The Church of St. Giles in Lomnice dates back to the 13th century. Its appearance combines Gothic, Renaissance and Empire styles. Particularly remarkable is the preserved roof structure: It consists of three parts and is considered the oldest identified roof structure in the Karlovy Vary Region outside the city of Cheb and the Chebsko area. For a cultural stay, the church therefore offers several historical layers that can be read in a single building.

Mining Colony and Memorial Sites

The mining colony was built in 1921 for the miners of the Köstner mine, which was later named Jiří. The houses with mansard roofs are arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard. This architectural structure makes the colony understandable as an independent chapter of local history, without reducing it to a single building.

The history of the place is also visible in several monuments. The war memorial of Lomnice and Týn was ceremonially unveiled on 14 July 1920 below the Church of St. Giles. In 1937, it was moved to a park on the village square in front of the old school building. The Morový sloup was erected in 1681 in memory of the victims of the 1633 plague epidemic. Today, it survives as a fragment of an early Baroque granite column from 1681; its upper section has been destroyed.

Events and Local Orientation

The traditional sv. Jiljí pilgrimage was announced in Lomnice for Saturday, 30 August 2025. A music programme, attractions, refreshments and a concluding fireworks display were planned. In addition, the sports organisation TJ Lomnice has departments for football, ten-pin bowling, table tennis and nohejbal.

Road No. 210 connects Lomnice with the nearby E48. This road runs from Cheb via Karlovy Vary and onward to Prague.
