Gossengrün: Cultural Heritage and Cycling Route in the Czech Republic

Cultural Heritage between Church and Local History

When choosing Gossengrün for a trip to the Czech Republic, you can include Krajková as a cultural destination in your plans. The focus is the church “Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla”: its first written mention dates back to 1357. The church has Gothic origins, was renovated in the Renaissance style in the 16th century, and received a new tower in the 19th century. The church has a Rococo altar with acanthus ornaments, as well as a masterful Italian wood carving from the 18th century. The last documented reconstruction took place in 1996–1997.

Below the church stands the Marian Column. It was donated to the town in 1701 by Countess Marie Polixena z Písnice and renewed in 1922. A plague column on the road from Krajková to Květná commemorates the plague epidemic of 1680. This plague column was repaired and fully re-erected by a local company in 2008. The cultural attractions therefore combine religious art with local history.

Historic Houses and Local Tradition

Several valuable half-timbered and plank-built houses in the style of the upper Ohře region have been preserved in Krajková. They were built after the town fire of 1807; among them is Haasův dvůr, house number 145. The preserved houses create a distinctive accent alongside the church and its sacred artworks. Another testament to the local architectural and religious history is the Svatojánská kaplička: its construction was made possible in 1761 by Julius Heinrich von Pissnitz.

The tradition of lace-making is also part of Krajková’s history. It developed after the decline of mining and is reflected in the town’s present-day name. This broadens the perspective from individual buildings to the town’s craft and economic development.

Combine Culture with a Long Route

If you would like to plan a longer stretch in addition to visiting the cultural attractions, you can include the “Ve stopách Habartovského pochodu” route. It is 21.7 km long, runs mainly on paved paths, and is also recommended for cycling tours. At 21.7 km, the route is an independent excursion destination alongside visits to the church, columns, and historic houses. The predominantly paved route and the recommendation for cycling tours are practical criteria for your planning. You can therefore choose the route as the active focus or place the cultural destinations in Krajková at the center of your trip.
