Josefsdorf: Hiking, History and Nature
Josefsdorf combines varied hiking experiences with a multifaceted local history. Around Josefov, marked trails lead to natural attractions, viewpoints and historical traces. They also include Hartenberk Castle (Hartenberg, Hertenberg), the Chapel of St. Joseph, two cycling routes and distinctive landscapes such as the Medard Lake area. The Josefov circular hiking trail is 10.5 kilometres long and marked with yellow hiking signs. It includes 23 interesting stations. The main palace houses a permanent exhibition on ministerial castles, so in addition to the historic complex, the visit also offers a clearly defined cultural and historical theme.
The Chapel of St. Joseph is another part of the area’s cultural history. It was built in the Baroque style and restored with grants from the Karlovy Vary Region and partly through a public fundraising campaign. Nature, Mining and Cycling Connections
A trail near Josefov provides access to preserved remains of medieval mining. Visitors can see numerous adits, collapsed shafts, mining pits, rows of mining pits and barren spoil heaps. About 3 kilometres from Josefov, Medard Lake is being filled as part of the reclamation of the mining area. The area is currently a temporarily protected site and serves as a refuge for waterfowl. Another viewpoint is located near Oloví: the Cibulka observation tower on Šibeniční vrch is freely accessible year-round and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
