Sněžné – Cycling Routes, Nature and History in the Orlické Mountains
Sněžné lies in a gentle valley of the Náchodská vrchovina highlands in the northeastern part of the Orlické Mountains. The elevation ranges from 540 to 738 metres above sea level. This gives the town a combination of landscape experiences and a remarkably rich history: wooden architecture, a chapel, traces of linen production and the Skutina fortification complex are all located here within an easily manageable destination. Those looking for accommodation can therefore consider Sněžné as a base for a variety of days out – from a simple cycling trip to exploring the region’s history.
Cycling with Shorter and Longer Stages
Two marked cycling routes show how Sněžné fits into the surrounding area. Route 4214 runs from Janov and Tis through Sněžné and Polom by the chapel to Olešnice v Orlických horách. It is approximately 7 kilometres long. Route 4325 runs from Sněžné via Janov and Ohnišov to Dobruška and covers approximately 12 kilometres. The different directions make it possible to plan trips through various places without combining the two routes into a single route.
Another option is the easy route from Sněžné through the valley of the Zlatý potok and back. It starts at the Horalka chalet in Sněžné and is also suitable for children in a bicycle trailer. This explicitly described feature is particularly relevant for families who want to combine an active day with a manageable distance. A blue-marked hiking trail also passes the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows in Sněžné.
Nature Trail, Meadows and Views
The Bílé lišky nature trail is a 3-kilometre circular route with 18 stations focusing on nature and local history. It begins at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows on the edge of the town, leads through the forest and a municipal avenue, and then returns to the chapel. Information panels with tasks and play elements are part of the route, including a dendrophone and an exercise bike. The circular route thus combines nature observation, physical activity and local topics in a clearly described sequence.
The surroundings of Sněžné also offer distinctive landscapes. There are botanically interesting, wet to boggy meadows with globeflowers, orchids, spring snowflakes and primroses. The Louka u Čtvrtečkova mlýna nature monument is also located on the left bank of the Zlatý potok, where spring snowflakes bloom abundantly. From the hill above the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, views extend across the surrounding area and the ridge of the Orlické Mountains.
Chapel, Wooden Buildings and Fortress History
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was consecrated in 1892 and is considered an architecturally and historically significant building in Sněžné. Numerous log houses in its vicinity are among the town’s tourist attractions. The former linen manufactory building No. 1, a protected wooden structure, is also part of the town’s history. A linen manufactory was established in Sněžné in the second half of the 18th century and employed up to 500 home weavers. Visitors can also see the former school building constructed in the traditional wooden style.
An unusual historical trace is the find from 1961: a treasure containing 2,500 white coins of Vladislaus II was discovered in Sněžné. The unfinished Skutina fortification complex is part of the area’s military history. It is a tourist attraction and part of the Czechoslovak border fortification system, which was built from 1935 to 1938 along the then border of Czechoslovakia.
The N-S 48 U Stodol bunker at the Skutina Fortress Museum contains a 36-metre-deep shaft with 201 steps. Approximately 9 metres of a concrete gallery are accessible underground. The site was opened to the public in 2001 as the Skutina Fortress Museum.
