Discover Bolehošť

Bolehošť combines a forested setting with notable traces of local history, cycling routes and its own culinary tradition. If you are choosing a place for your stay in the Czech Republic based on culture, landscape and regional character, you will find several clearly distinguishable points of interest here: historic buildings, small memorial sites, paths through the surrounding area and Bolehošťské zelí, which has been cultivated and processed into sauerkraut for centuries.

Forests, Nature Reserve and Orientation in the Village

Bolehošť is surrounded by extensive forests on three sides. The Chropotínský háj Nature Reserve is also located nearby. It protects a remnant of a floodplain forest with species-rich vegetation, complementing the more strongly culture-historical village tour with a natural area.

A small park in the centre provides a first point of orientation. A tourist pavilion with a map is located there. For a walk through Bolehošť, several specific destinations can be linked together: the monument to the victims of the World War, a Christian cross and the former Evangelical school. The former school and the other destinations are among the historic traces in the village landscape.

Zvonička and the History of Bolehošť

A particular point of reference is the stone Zvonička. It was built in 2004 to mark the 610th anniversary of the municipality’s first mention. Zvonička houses a historic bell cast in 1644 in Hradec Králové by Martin Exner. The revived tradition of ringing the bell is also maintained there: it is rung every Sunday at noon.

Bolehošť and Bolehošťská Lhota have a history whose first surviving written mention dates from 1394. The castle in Bolehošťská Lhota, built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, is also of interest for the local history. This makes it possible to trace the historical development not only through a single building, but through several historic sites and periods.

The Hunting Lodge and Cycling Routes

The hunting lodge was built around 1700 by Jeroným Colloredo, the owner of the Opočno estate. It was built to accommodate hunters, who could rest, eat and occasionally spend the night there. Today, it is described as a distinctive landmark of Bolehošť and stands on a hill above the village. A lime-tree avenue begins at the hunting lodge and extends southeastwards to the Klabák Forest.

Several cycling routes pass through Bolehošť. They connect the village with Třebechovice pod Orebem, Týniště nad Orlicí and Opočno. This allows you to distinguish between historic destinations in the village and bicycle excursions when planning your day, without having to view the local history and landscape separately.

Sauerkraut as a Regional Tradition

Bolehošťské zelí is also part of Bolehošť’s distinctive character. The cultivation of this cabbage and its processing into sauerkraut have been a centuries-old tradition in the village. Sauerkraut is sold year-round at the Zelárna in Bolehošť. This connection between agricultural history and year-round sales adds a culinary theme to sightseeing in the village alongside its buildings, forest and cycling routes.

For regional connections, bus services run from Bolehošť towards Týniště nad Orlicí and Opočno. Trains operate on the Týniště nad Orlicí–Náchod route.
