Slatina Nad Zdobnicí: Baroque, Nature and Historic Routes

Slatina nad Zdobnicí can be explored through its culture, landscape and historic routes. The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord stands in the village, while west of the municipality there is a geological locality with springs and travertine deposits. There is also a railway connection, a moderately difficult trekking cycle route and a 28.5-kilometre trail following in the footsteps of Czech landscape painters. The village therefore offers different starting points for a trip combining cultural discoveries with active excursions.

Baroque church and evidence of local history

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord was consecrated in 1699. The spacious Baroque building is made of stone and brick and was built by František Adam z Bubna. Inside, there is a richly carved Baroque wooden altar dating from around 1701. It was created by an unknown woodcarver. This combination of architectural history, materials and craftsmanship makes the church one of the municipality’s interesting places to visit.

The furnishings also include the large church bell from 1523, considered the oldest monument in Slatina nad Zdobnicí. The local gallery provides another cultural highlight. It displays paintings by many renowned artists who also worked in the region. The picture gallery of the cultural club of the local agricultural cooperative was established with the support of Professor Holý and teacher Alois Krčmář. Professor Holý lent works or helped obtain them; among them are works by leading visual artists from the second half of the 19th and the 20th centuries.

Natural areas with precise access information

The Ve Slatinské stráni Nature Reserve protects marl slopes with thermophilous flora, including the lady’s slipper orchid. Another aspect of the landscape can be seen at the Slatina nad Zdobnicí–Vápenka geological locality. It lies west of the municipality above the Zdobnice River, on a wooded slope. Several springs and travertine deposits shape the described locality.

The access conditions should be explicitly taken into account for orientation: access to Slatina nad Zdobnicí–Vápenka leads through trackless terrain, and the locality is more than 250 metres from the road. This natural site should therefore be classified differently from a destination located directly beside a road. The specific terrain conditions are consequently part of choosing a suitable activity.

Cycling routes, railway line and historic routes

Cycling route 4075 passes through Slatina nad Zdobnicí. It is considered a moderately difficult, 34.4-kilometre trekking cycle route and runs from Vamberk via Slatina nad Zdobnicí to Říčky in the Eagle Mountains.

A second route has a different focus. “In the Footsteps of Czech Landscape Painters” begins at Slatina nad Zdobnicí railway station and leads via Rybná nad Zdobnicí, the area above the Rybná stop, Javornice, Zadní Ochoz, Nebeská Rybná and the bridge in Hamernice back to Slatina nad Zdobnicí railway station. The route is 28.5 kilometres long. While route 4075 is described as a trekking cycle route, this trail focuses on the connection to the traces left by Czech landscape painters.

The history of transport also extends beyond the village. A railway line from Rokytnice v Orlických horách to Doudleby nad Orlicí passes through Slatina nad Zdobnicí. In Doudleby nad Orlicí, it connects to the Prague–Letohrad line. A historic route, known in the Middle Ages as the Royal Route, also passed through Slatina nad Zdobnicí: through the Zdobnice valley, then through the valley of the Slatinský stream and onward through the Suchá forest via Kunvald to Silesia. Objects from the Bronze Age and gold and silver coins from the 13th and 14th centuries were found along this historic route during railway construction work.
