Panske Pole: Fortification History and Trails in the Orlické Mountains

Nature Trail between Panské Pole and Anenský vrch

The Opevnění Rokytnicka nature trail comprises fourteen information panels and leads to structures belonging to the Czechoslovak fortifications. These structures were built from 1936 to 1938 along the ridges of the Orlické Mountains. The nature trail follows the red hiking trail markings between Panské Pole and Anenský vrch. The individual panels divide the route into manageable stages. This allows you to explore the historic fortifications not only as an individual destination, but also in conjunction with a hike through the mountain landscape. The route is particularly suitable for anyone who wants to connect historical contexts directly with the landscape while walking.

Hanička Fortress and Underground Passages

Hanička Artillery Fortress was built from 1936 to 1938 as part of the Czechoslovak border defence. During a visit, you tour the museum and pass through underground passages beneath the individual fortress structures. The visit therefore includes both the above-ground structures and the routes beneath the fortress grounds. Hanička Museum is best reached via the red hiking trail along the ridge of the Orlické Mountains. Above the Panské Pole–Hanička settlement, a branch from this trail leads directly to the museum grounds. The R-S-74 structure, an infantry block of the heavy fortifications listed as a cultural monument, is also located in the cadastral area of Panské Pole. This means that various examples of military history are concentrated within a small thematic area.

The ANNA lookout tower stands on Anenský vrch at an elevation of 991 m above sea level. The tower is nearly 17 m high, offers views in all directions and is freely accessible. The viewpoint provides a scenic accent alongside the underground and historic sites of the fortress. You can explore the fortification structures and then turn your gaze across the surroundings of the Orlické Mountains.

Routes for Planning Your Stay

The section of the Jiráskova horská cesta from Mezivrší via Panské Pole (Hanička) to Rokytnice is 12 km long. You can also join this route in Panské Pole. Its length makes the section a clearly defined option for planning a day trip. Another access route to Hanička Fortress leads from the overflow car park along the red hiking trail towards Anenský vrch through the Orlické hory Protected Landscape Area. This provides both a longer trail section and a specific access route to the fortress for choosing your location. Depending on your preferred focus, you can include either the ridge route or the access route from the overflow car park in your plans.
