Discover Pěčín: Valley, Church and Cycling Route

Pěčín between the Valley and Cultural Heritage

Pěčín reveals its character through the combination of the valley, hillside locations, viewpoints and historic landmarks. Most houses lie in the valley of the Pěčínský potok stream. On the valley slopes, the built-up area becomes more loosely arranged, giving way to scattered individual properties. As a result, the more densely built-up valley and the houses scattered across the slopes are clearly distinct from one another.

In the surroundings of Pěčín, the relevant zone of the Orlické hory Protected Landscape Area includes continuous arable land and orchards. In addition to the wooded valley, the landscape therefore also includes open areas shaped by agriculture. Here, arable land and orchards appear as continuous areas rather than merely isolated elements between the houses. The alternation of valley, slopes and open areas shapes the surroundings more strongly than any single, uniform landscape type.

Church and Castle as Historical Points of Reference

A prominent building is the kostel Narození sv. Jana Křtitele church. It was built in 1727–1729 by the builder Jan Kumper, who came from Hradec Králové. The church is an oriented, single-nave, plastered masonry building. Its floor plan consists of a rectangular nave and a presbytery closed on three sides. A four-storey square tower stands in front of the western façade. The building thus clearly shows both its longitudinal layout and the distinct arrangement of the nave, presbytery and tower.

Other historical traces include the ruins of Pěčín Castle, which are classified as a significant archaeological site. The castle ruins complement the surviving church architecture with a second historical point of reference. While the church survives as a specific building with a precise construction period and described form, the ruins point to the archaeological importance of the site.

Views of the Village and Landscape

Two viewpoints show different sides of Pěčín and its surroundings. From the road near house no. 15, there is a panorama of the deep, wooded valley of the stream and the Zdobnice. Here, the focus is on the valley and the wooded slopes. Okresní skála, by contrast, offers a view of the central part of Pěčín with its school and church. The two locations therefore differ in what they look toward: one shows the landscape along the valley, while the other shows the built-up village centre with its prominent buildings.

Cycling with a Clear Choice of Route

The Litice–Orlické Záhoří cycling route is 38.5 km long and classified as challenging. The marked cycling route 4075 from Litice to Orlické Záhoří runs via the junction designated as Pěčín, rozc. The two pieces of information therefore refer to different orientation points in route planning: the first describes the route's length and difficulty, while the second identifies the marked connection and its course via Pěčín, rozc. The place name refers to the point where the route passes through Pěčín.
