Boseň – Valečov and Rocks in Bohemian Paradise

Boseň combines protected landscapes, medieval ruins and unusual evidence of regional history. The entire municipality lies within the Bohemian Paradise Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Český ráj). This makes it a destination where nature experiences, historic sites and walks can bring together different interests during a single stay. The character of the area is particularly vivid at Valečov, Mužský and the distinctive rock formations.

Landscape Among Rocks and Old Trees

The Příhrazské skály rock city consists of 178 towers and peripheral massifs. The name describes a landscape in which the impression is shaped not only by individual rocks, but by a clearly structured succession of towers and rock massifs. You will find another natural monument in the bailey area of Valečov: the Boseň lime tree is 22 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 795 centimetres at a height of 130 centimetres. Its age is estimated at around 400 years; in 1981, it was declared a protected tree. The crown has a bizarre shape, and the massive trunk is hollow.

Valečov: Ruins, Exhibition and Culture

The ruins of Valečov Castle in Boseň are open year-round. Visits are self-guided with a printed guide. The castle core includes a masonry palace, rock chambers and passageways. The entrance exhibition displays archaeological finds from the collections of the museum in Mladá Boleslav. This allows you to explore the site through both its architectural remains and the history of the artefacts, without being tied to a guided tour.

Below the castle lies an amphitheatre where Valečovské léto takes place every year during the season. The popular festival features cultural, theatre and concert performances. The Church of Saint Wenceslas in Boseň also adds its own cultural highlight: the Baroque building dates from 1729.

Hiking by Route and Interest

For a clearly defined day hike, the Valečov–Drábské světničky route is a good choice. It is eight kilometres long and moderately difficult. A broader connection is described by the Golden Trail of Bohemian Paradise: it leads through Valečov and onward to Klamorna and Drábské světničky. This lets you choose between an eight-kilometre route and a longer trail passing several sights.

A bus stop in Boseň is located one kilometre from Valečov Castle. This specific distance helps with orientation between the village and the castle without implying anything about other transport connections.

Mužský and Traces of Early Settlement

The settlement of Mužský in Boseň is a village heritage reserve. Its centre consists predominantly of log-built architecture, representing a different form of historical heritage from the stone and rock-hewn elements of Valečov. The Klamorna archaeological site is also located in the Mužský area. It contains a prehistoric hillfort; finds provide evidence of human presence as early as the Neolithic period 5,000 years ago.
