Dobsin: Nature, Castles and Trails in the Bohemian Paradise

Nature between Forests and Sandstone

In the vicinity of Dobšín, the Údolí Plakánek nature reserve protects the floodplain of the gorge-like valley along the upper reaches of the Klenice, as well as adjacent woodland. The protected floodplain and the adjacent woodland shape the character of the valley. An educational trail runs between sandstone rocks along the Klenice River and offers a view of Kost Castle. The route along the river, the sandstone rocks and the view of Kost combine nature and culture in a manageable trail. This allows landscape and culture to be considered as different elements of an excursion.

Castles and Historic Sites

In the vicinity of Dobšín, Trosky is a publicly accessible castle ruin and has been classified as a national cultural monument since 2002. Humprecht Hunting Lodge stands above Sobotka and was built in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. Frescoes and a distinctive two-storey entrance pavilion define its design. The destinations offer different historical highlights: Trosky represents a ruin, Humprecht Renaissance architecture and Kost a Gothic castle on a sandstone spur.

The well-preserved Gothic Kost Castle stands on a massive sandstone spur in a wooded valley. It offers four different guided tours. Valdštejn Castle can be reached on foot from the vicinity of Dobšín via green- and red-marked hiking trails.

Routes for Orientation

Route 4009 runs along the northern side of Dobšín, while Route 4010 reaches the eastern end of the village. For orientation within the village, the two routes are clearly distinguished by their location: 4009 lies to the north, while 4010 leads to the eastern end.

History and Local Traditions

The first written mention of Dobšín dates from 1556. Archaeological finds in the region provide evidence of settlement dating back many years before the beginning of the Common Era. The book “Dobšín a Kamenice: Ve víru historických událostí” covers local settlements and names, territorial development, and changes in education, culture and sport. “Paměti dobšínské školy” documents the history of the local school building, as well as excursions and cultural events.

Easter rattling is a tradition in Dobšín and begins on Maundy Thursday. Children who wish to take part meet on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. in Kamenice at Boček’s. The Dobšín Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1908. On the coat of arms, the gold colour refers to the local sandstone; a pine branch symbolises the predominant type of local woodland.
