Niměřice: Castle, Chapel, Park and Cycle Paths

Niměřice combines an impressive castle history with a peaceful landscape along the Strenický potok stream. Niměřice Castle and its history

Jan Weithof had Niměřice Castle built in 1832 in the late Neoclassical style. The two-winged, L-shaped building has a roof belfry and a clock. However, its history goes back further: a fortress once stood on the site of today’s castle. The first written mention of Niměřice dates from 1354; at that time, there was a farmstead here belonging to Adam of Niměřice.

The town is also connected with the history of Czech music. In the summer of 1862, Bedřich Smetana stayed at Niměřice Castle with his wife. During your stay, you can therefore explore the town’s history not only through its architecture, but also through its historical figures.

Park, castle grounds and visiting arrangements

The heritage-listed castle grounds of Niměřice include an extensive English landscape park. A perimeter wall with gates encloses the grounds. Niměřice Castle is privately owned and well maintained. The grounds open their gates only for events such as weddings, celebrations or conferences. When planning your visit, it is therefore important not to regard the castle grounds as an excursion destination that is freely accessible at all times, but to take the documented event schedule into account.

Chapel opposite the castle gate

Opposite the castle gate stands the pseudo-Romanesque chapel “Kaple Korunování Panny Marie”, dating from 1864. It preserves an original entrance bearing the year 1812. Remains of paintings have survived above the entrance portal and inside. The chapel adds a distinct architectural detail to the castle’s history and provides another specific point of reference as you explore Niměřice.

Cycle paths and the landscape along the Strenický potok

Niměřice lies on the banks of the Strenický potok stream. The area around its course includes low-lying woods suitable for relaxation. Cycle routes 8157 and 143 run through the surroundings of Niměřice. In addition, a regularly maintained path leads from Niměřice along the track bed of a disused railway to the outskirts of Dolní Cetno. This creates clear themes for travel planning with different interests: the castle and chapel for cultural and historical discoveries, the woods and stream for peaceful hours, and the cycle paths and former railway track bed for active exploration of the surrounding area.
