Vonoklasy – Educational Trail, Local History and Nature
Vonoklasy combines an educational trail with visible traces of local history and a landscape where geological outcrops, protected habitats and viewpoints bring together a range of interests. At its heart is Okolím Vonoklas, a circular route in the form of an educational trail. It runs along the northern edge of Vonoklasy and focuses on the Český kras Protected Landscape Area, nature and the landscape. For travellers who like to explore an excursion through specific stops, this creates a multifaceted picture of the place.
Okolím Vonoklas: Stops between the village and the landscape
The educational trail passes the wooden wayside chapel of P. Marie, which dates from 1893. Another prominent stop is Karasova vyhlídka at the southwestern end of the educational trail. It serves as a launch site for paragliding. Near the northwestern section is Velká skála, which serves as a viewpoint. The various locations give the circular route a clear spatial orientation, without any single viewpoint defining the overall character of the trail.
The route through the village also provides a point of reference: five tourist routes meet at the Na návsi signpost in Vonoklasy. Which route takes centre stage depends on the desired focus: Okolím Vonoklas connects the themes of landscape and nature, while the stops in the village make historical traces visible.
Chapels and Historical Evidence
The first written mention of Vonoklasy dates from 1227. The village square is home to the neo-Gothic Chapel of sv. Václav. It dates from 1887 and has a bell tower. Together with the wayside chapel of P. Marie, it forms an architectural contrast between a neo-Gothic village chapel and a wooden small religious monument along the educational trail.
The architectural history is particularly concentrated at the former Baroque farmstead No. 12. It is the only cultural monument in Vonoklasy. The former farmstead comprises a residential building with a log-built core, a stage-set gate and a free-standing wooden granary on a stone base. The preserved wooden building of the former farmstead No. 12 served as a granary from the beginning of the 19th century. Its historical function thus remains as much a part of the place as the farmstead’s various architectural elements.
Geology, Habitats and Ancient Trees
The former Ve skále quarry is among the notable landscape features. An outcrop there shows folds between the Silurian and Devonian periods. The former quarry also has a relatively rich fossil fauna, particularly trilobites and bivalves. For visitors interested in the formation and history of the landscape, this geological site complements the educational trail’s cultural and historical stops with a markedly older layer of time.
Ecosystems of deciduous forests, forest-steppe and steppe formations, as well as scree slopes, have been preserved in Vonoklasy. They include numerous protected plant and animal species. Another natural monument is the pedunculate oak, whose age is estimated at around 600 years. The approximate age preserves the character of an estimate. A small body of water is located at U louže, where communities of aquatic plants and animals have survived. The natural landscape thus ranges from dry, open formations to a small water-based habitat.
