Discover Únětice

Únětice lies northwest of Prague in the valley of the Únětický potok stream. Its cadastral area directly borders Prague’s cadastral area and the Tiché údolí protected area. This means the locality combines local history, brewing culture, and trails through protected landscapes within a small geographical area—an interesting combination for anyone who does not want to focus their stay on just one attraction.

Brewery and Local Features

A prominent point of interest is the architecturally valuable brewery building. Beer brewing resumed there in 2011. Únětický pivovar offers a brewery taproom with a pleasant garden and beer straight from the tank. To reach the brewery taproom, first take Metro Line A to Dejvická, then bus line 355 to the Únětice, Na parcelách stop, and finally walk a short distance.

Church, Chapels, and the Bronze Age

The first written mention of Únětice as a village with a church dates from 1125. After 1770, a new church, a rectory, and a farm complex were built. The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady was rebuilt and consecrated on August 17, 1783.

Several smaller structures add to the historic character of the village. The cemetery chapel of Saint Joseph has a pentagonal floor plan on the outside and a decagonal one inside; it is also an immovable cultural monument. West of the center stands the Baroque Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1716. In front of it is a column with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1699. East of the church lies Tereziánský špejchar, a granary dating from 1752 in the historic center of the village.

Archaeology also makes Únětice significant beyond the village itself. The protected archaeological burial ground lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Únětice, Roztoky, and Žalov. Between 1870 and 1882, physician Čeněk Rýzner discovered and investigated an Early Bronze Age burial ground in Únětice. He investigated the burial ground in 1879; it consisted of four groups of graves.

Hiking, Cycling, and Nature Observation

An educational trail runs through the Roztocký háj–Tiché údolí and Údolí Únětického potoka nature reserves. Several hiking and cycling trails also run there and can be accessed from Únětice. One particularly clearly described route passes Dolní rybník below Holý vrch and follows the Únětický potok stream through Tiché údolí to Roztoky. This allows a visit to the village and an experience of the landscape to be combined in one direction, without equating the character of the individual areas.

In the nearby Holý vrch area, Alšova vyhlídka is located in the upper part of the southwestern slope. Climbing practice areas are also situated there above the Strážce trail. Those more interested in the surroundings than in individual buildings can find another way to explore them through the “Únětická příroda v mapě” project: it records biodiversity-rich places in the cadastral area of Únětice and involves the public in nature observation and the collection of biodiversity data.
