Karlík Between Castle History and a Protected Valley

When you explore Karlík, you encounter two distinctly different sides of the village: medieval traces and a protected landscape. Today, Karlík Castle is known only through the remains of its ramparts and masonry. Based on these surviving traces, it was probably a small castle. Nevertheless, during the reign of Charles IV, it formed an important part of the defence system protecting Karlštejn. At the same time, the castle guarded a historic route from Prague via Vonoklasy and Mořina to Karlštejn. Despite its relatively small size, it therefore served a purpose that extended beyond the village itself.

A Rotunda and Church Reflect Several Eras

One of Karlík’s historical highlights is the Romanesque Rotunda of Saint Martin. It is considered the village’s first Christian church and was probably founded during the reign of Přemysl Otakar I. towards the end of the 12th century. A church in Karlík was substantially enlarged in the Baroque style in 1767. In 1834, it underwent further repairs both inside and out, before being completely rebuilt in 1889. These dates show how the village’s sacred architecture changed over several centuries. The sequence combines a Romanesque foundation, Baroque enlargement, repairs and complete rebuilding into several historical layers.

Karlické Valley and a Specific Hike

Karlík’s natural side can be seen in the Karlické Valley Nature Reserve. It includes wooded slopes on the left bank of the Karlický Stream, as well as a smaller section on the right bank between Roblín and Karlík. The area is important for protecting biodiversity and complements the historical themes with a distinct natural environment. Both banks are important for orientation in the valley: the wooded slopes make up the larger area, while the section between Roblín and Karlík on the right bank is smaller.

For hike planning, the tour “S císařovnou Eliškou z Karlštejna na Karlík” offers clear key details: it is 15 km long and has a moderate difficulty level. It starts at the Zadní Třebaň railway stop. In Karlík, you can leave the red-marked route and continue on the blue-marked trail to Dobřichovice railway station. At 15 km, the tour is a longer route; when planning your day, the moderate difficulty level, the start at the railway stop and the possible continuation to the railway station are therefore relevant in addition to the distance. The start, change of trail markings and continuation can thus be considered as separate planning points.
