Pohoří Between Nature Park, Forest and Gold Mining

Pohoří is part of the Střed Čech Nature Park and lies in Dolní Posázaví, 11 kilometres east of the confluence of the Sázava and Vltava rivers. The Hornopožárský Forest borders the southeastern part of the village, while the Halířské gold-bearing zone lies to the southwest. Forest and gold-bearing land thus appear side by side as distinct landscape features. The directional details provide a clear frame of reference: forest shapes the southeast, while the gold-bearing belt defines the southwest. Mining history is also a distinct theme in Pohoří, brought particularly vividly to life at the Štola Halíře.

One specific aspect of nature conservation is the Skalsko Natural Monument. It protects wetland communities with significant and specially protected plant and animal species, and is considered a typical landscape section of the Říčany Uplands. Here, particular habitats and species are at the centre of attention. This adds a precise ecological perspective to the nature park, rather than treating nature merely as a general scenic backdrop.

Mining History and Nature Trail

The Štola Halíře is an exploratory mine dating from the mid-20th century, located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Pohoří. Its unique diamond-shaped cross-section gives the site an unusual form. Visitors can see historical mining equipment and fluorescent minerals there, as well as try their hand at gold panning. The mine complex is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. This brings together a look at the mine’s design with first-hand insight into its equipment, minerals and the activity of gold panning.

The Kněží hora–Halíře nature trail runs between the settlement of Pohoří-Chotouň and Kněží hora mountain. It is of moderate difficulty and marked with a blue-and-white square symbol; however, the markings are not adequate everywhere. Check trail conditions and signage on site rather than relying on the symbol alone. Unlike a visit to the mine complex, the nature trail offers a different kind of experience: a route between two named points, where navigation and its moderate difficulty are part of the planning.

Pohoří is also home to a memorial to those who fell in the First World War. It adds a reminder of remembrance in the village to its mining history.

Skiing at the Chotouň Ski Area

The Chotouň Ski Area has two parallel POMA drag lifts with telescopic T-bars. They are 300 and 280 metres long, with a vertical drop of 50 metres. There is also a 53-metre-long conveyor belt with a 5-metre vertical drop for the youngest skiers. The gentle slopes are mainly suitable for beginners and skiers who are slightly more advanced. As seasonal operations vary, it is advisable to check current operating conditions before making specific plans.

Getting There and Accommodation

From Prague, Pohoří can be reached by car or bus via Kamenice. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before your trip. This lets you plan your journey using the stated mode of transport without assuming a particular connection or frequency.

These different themes can help you decide how to plan your days. Then search for hotels for your travel dates and check current availability.
