Měchenice: Vltava Riverbank, History and Active Excursions

Měchenice combines a long history with its location on the Vltava and various opportunities for diverse days out. The village lies on the left bank of the Vltava, 2 km downstream from the confluence of the Sázava and Vltava rivers. At the same time, Měchenice is one of the oldest settlements in Bohemia; the first mention of its existence dates back to 999. This makes the village suitable for anyone who, when looking for accommodation, wants to include not only overnight stays but also landscapes, culture, and activities in their travel planning.

Vltava Riverbank and Historical Traces

A striking connection across the river is the Měchenice Steel Bridge. It connects the right and left banks of the Vltava and is therefore one of the village’s specific landmarks. The Chapel of St. Ludmila is located in the lower part of Sloupecká Street. It complements the historical character of Měchenice with a small, clearly situated religious building.

At Měchenice railway station, there is a preserved water tower that was once used to refill steam locomotives.

The event calendar includes “Měchenická letní noc.” It takes place regularly at the end of June; in the municipal events schedule, it is set for the penultimate Saturday in June. For the transition from summer to autumn, “Rozloučení s létem” is scheduled for the first Saturday in September. Those who want to plan their trip around a particular date can include these two events separately in their plans.

Another opportunity for shared experiences is offered by the Měchenice Tennis Club. The club organizes a tennis school for everyone interested in tennis and also holds tennis tournaments. This complements the cultural and landscape-related points of interest with a sporting option, without requiring you to limit your stay to just one type of activity.

The hills around Měchenice are suitable for walks and hiking trips. Cross-country skiing is possible in the vicinity of Měchenice in winter, depending on the weather. This weather-dependent option expands the choices for a stay outside the warm season, but it should not be understood as a firm guarantee of winter sports conditions.

There is also a specific starting point on the water: a usual launching and landing point for paddling is located near Bojov in Měchenice. Together with the location on the left bank of the Vltava, this provides another opportunity to plan your trip around the water.
