KosoÅ™ between Natural Monument and Cultural History
KosoÅ™ lies in the ÄŒeský kras Protected Landscape Area and combines protected natural landscapes with prominent reminders of the area’s history. For you, this means a destination where natural history and cultural monuments stand side by side: the ÄŒerné rokle National Nature Monument, the protected areas around RadotÃn and the Chapel of Saint Anne each give the area a distinct focus.
If you are travelling with children, you can tailor your stay to their interests. Geology, fossils, plants and insects offer a different way of engaging with the area than the history of chapels, bells and monuments. KosoÅ™ also offers concrete points of interest for adults who want to get to know a place through more than just its landscape and are planning the next stages of their journey.
Černé rokle and the protected areas around Kosoř
The ÄŒerné rokle National Nature Monument lies between KosoÅ™ and RadotÃn and includes land in the cadastral area of KosoÅ™. Its international geological and palaeontological significance is connected with a stratotype profile for the boundary between the Lochkovian and Pragian stages. A stratotype profile serves as a geological reference for such a boundary.
The nature monument includes rocky steppes, steppe grasslands and abandoned quarries. They are home to remarkable flora, bryoflora and mycoflora, as well as a rich variety of insect life. The PR Klapice Nature Reserve is also located in the vicinity of Kosoř, a steep, wooded spur with several abandoned quarry faces. The wooded spur creates a distinct landscape feature alongside the rocky steppes and abandoned quarries of Černé rokle.
The PR RadotÃnské údolà Nature Reserve extends southwards as far as KosoÅ™ and also includes land in the cadastral area of KosoÅ™. It features internationally significant geology and several classic fossil sites. This makes the landscape particularly appealing to travellers who want to experience geological formations, natural monuments and the history of the rocks as distinct parts of their trip.
Chapel, Bells and Local History
The Chapel of Saint Anne in Kosoř is an immovable cultural monument that was added to a modernised small château in 1722. The chapel contains two bells dating from 1723, one larger and one smaller. Together with the chapel itself, they form a clear historical focal point within the village.
A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk erected in KosoÅ™ in October 1895 is listed as a national cultural monument. KosoÅ™ is indirectly first documented in written historical sources around 1310; the place name appears in the byname of the nobleman Valter of KosoÅ™, Walterus, miles de Cossor.
Educational Trail with a View of Černá rokle
The Kosoř–Černá rokle educational trail ends in KosoÅ™ on Dolejšà Street at a viewpoint overlooking ÄŒerná rokle. For trip planning, the end of the trail provides a clear point of reference: the view of ÄŒerná rokle is the main focus there. Other destinations in the selection are Dolnà BÅ™ežany, JÃloviÅ¡tÄ›, Řitka, ChýnÄ›, Úhonice, Statenice, Revnice and BÅ™ezová-OleÅ¡ko.
