Dolní Břežany: History, Views and Cycling Routes

Dolní Břežany is a destination where local history, scenic views and active exploration come together in a special way. The Regional Information Centre guides visitors through the history of local settlement from prehistoric times to the present day. There are also historic sites such as Hradišťátko and the Šance section of Hradiště Závist, as well as several cycling loops. This allows you to tailor your stay to your interests: with culture and archaeology, a view from the tower or a longer bike ride through the area.

History from the Château to Prehistoric Times

A notable part of the town’s history is the Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene. It was built onto Dolní Břežany Château between 1885 and 1887. The Regional Information Centre in Dolní Břežany presents the development of local settlement from prehistoric times to the present day. It is also home to the ZÁVIST CAVE, a multi-projector installation visualising historical scenes. A visit therefore combines historical content with a presentation specially designed for this purpose.

Hradišťátko also represents the area’s older history. It is an early medieval fortified settlement on a promontory in the western neighbouring area of the municipality of Dolní Břežany. The fortification has survived as a sharply defined edge. The former rampart is best preserved on the southwestern and eastern sides; a ditch was also dug in front of the rampart. Here, the structure of a historic fortification can be understood directly from the surviving features of the terrain.

Observation Tower and Archaeological Traces at Hradiště Závist

The observation tower on Hradiště Závist has a viewing platform at a height of 24 metres. It is reached by 128 steps. These specific measurements give you a clear idea of what to expect from the viewpoint before including it in your day’s plans. The tower can also be combined with an experience of the historic landscape: the 16.3-kilometre route “Přes Šance do Károvského údolí” passes through the Šance section of Hradiště Závist. Visible remains of Celtic defensive ramparts have been preserved there.

Cycling Routes for Different Types of Exploration

There are several cycling loops in the Dolní Břežany area. They are connected to, or have been prepared for connection to, Prague’s cycling network and the national cycling network. Rest areas and information boards can be found along the cycling routes. This gives you both loop routes for a cycling trip and specific places to stop and orient yourself. The different route lengths and historic sites allow you to plan your exploration around your preferred focus without having to separate culture from physical activity.
