Kly: Chapel, Elbe Weir and Protected Elbe Landscape

Kly brings together three distinct aspects: a village square with its own architectural and engineering history, a protected Elbe landscape, and several cycling and trail routes. Culture and Engineering in Kly

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas is located directly on Kly’s village square. At the back, it features a colourful relief based on a design by Mikoláš Aleš. The chapel was built in 1886. Its location connects the centre of the village with a distinctive detail of art history that you can look out for during a cultural exploration.

A second prominent landmark leads to the Starý labský jez, the Old Elbe Weir. It is located on the southern edge of Obříství, but belongs to the cadastral area of Kly. The structure is a protected technical monument. The original piers have been preserved; the Swarzer structure was dismantled and the movable bridge was raised. The Starý labský jez was completed in 1912. The combination of its connection to the locality, hydraulic engineering and preserved structural elements makes the site interesting if you would like to combine the landscape with regional engineering history.

Elbe Landscape and Routes

The Úpor–Černínovsko Nature Reserve is located directly in the municipality of Kly and includes a former river channel and pools from the Elbe’s former course. These include natural eutrophic waters, muddy riverbanks, wet tall-herb communities and floodplain meadows. There are also extensively mown meadows, pioneer vegetation on silicate rocks, and mixed ash-alder floodplain forests. The interplay of water bodies, banks, meadows and floodplain forest defines the landscape.

Several routes and a trail are relevant for active days. Cycle Route 0024 passes through Kly and follows the Stará Boleslav–Neratovice–Kly–Mělník–Brozánky corridor. Cycle Route 8162 passes through Kly towards Košátky, Dřísy and Křenek. The Labská Trail also runs through Kly, Větrušice and Tuhaň. The different directions help you organise an active day according to your preferred route, while culture and landscape remain available as additional themes of the area.

In Kly, the Kelský biatlon is one of the popular organised events. It provides a different focus from the chapel, weir and nature reserve, thereby expanding the range of themes you can explore in the area.
