Monastery, castle and brewery

Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou is a destination for anyone who wants to discover several historical layers within a small area. The monastery was founded in 1145 and destroyed by the Hussites in 1420. A castle later arose from the ruins, and in 1852 it was converted into a brewery. On a tour, monastic history, castle architecture and a brewing tradition that is still maintained today come together.

The main portal of the original monastery has been preserved in the former monastery courtyard. In the central part of the complex, the North Portal stands as a freestanding wall. Its stepped portal ends in a pointed arch and is richly decorated with plant ornaments. The Klášter Brewery also includes rock cellars almost 20 metres deep. The beer still ferments and matures there today. For technical reasons, tours of the brewery are suspended until further notice; the historic areas therefore remain above all an opportunity to explore the development of the site independently.

Church and crypt as a second cultural trail

Another historic stop is Kostel Narození Panny Marie. The single-nave branch church combines Gothic and Renaissance features and is protected by the state as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was built around 1560 and preserves an Early Gothic portal on the north side of its nave.

The church includes a preserved crypt and a roofed fragment of the presbytery, which were reconstructed in 1997. The crypt was intended as a burial place for important members of the monastery. An archaeological survey found graves carved into the rock there. If you would like to visit this part of the complex, the crypt is accessible by prior arrangement; the keys are lent out by the municipal office.

Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou on cycling and hiking routes

There are also specific points of reference for planning active days. Cycle Route 223 runs via Svijany and Mnichovo Hradiště to Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou. A 55 km circular cycling route from Mladá Boleslav via Mnichovo Hradiště and back passes through the town and by the former castle-brewery complex. This provides both a designated connection and a longer circular route for orientation.

On foot, a blue-marked hiking trail follows a 17.3 km, five-hour route from Mnichovo Hradiště to Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou. The different route lengths help you clearly distinguish between cultural discoveries and physical activity when planning your day.

On the nearby section of the Jizera between Mnichovo Hradiště and Mladá Boleslav, the route is considered suitable for beginners and families; the four weirs along this section are not navigated. Near the brewery restaurant Restaurace Skála, there is also an option to launch a boat; a boat should be reserved in good time for this purpose.
