Wesetin Between Culture and Nature

Wesetin combines historical discoveries with varied trails through the countryside around Vsetín. The choice of activities for a stay is particularly diverse if you would like to combine culture, short walks through the town and longer excursions. Vsetín Castle was originally built as a Renaissance castle in the 17th century and was later remodelled in the Neoclassical style. In the permanent exhibition “Living Memory of the Region”, modern technologies present the history, traditions and other special features of Wallachia.

A special view of the town opens up from the 60-metre-high observation point in the castle tower. Vsetín Observatory complements the cultural offering with regular observations of the daytime and night skies, as well as themed lectures and discussion sessions. The range of experiences thus extends from regional history to astronomical topics.

Historical Trails Through Vsetín

Anyone wishing to explore the town on foot can follow the approximately 2-kilometre, easy Městský okruh památkami Vsetína circular route. The route leads to the town’s most interesting historic, architectural and cultural buildings and is suitable for pedestrians. Among the notable buildings is the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was founded in 1683 and belongs to the post-White Mountain Baroque style of the Vsetínsko region. The present building was created by remodelling an unfinished castle; features that remain include corner roundels with loopholes and the consoles of the former castle balcony.

The Evangelical Church of the Lower Church District also points to the history of the region. It was built in 1782–1783 following the issuance of the Patent of Toleration. The façade of the Občanská záložna also features sgraffiti based on designs by Mikoláš Aleš.

Educational Trails for Different Day Plans

For a longer hike or mountain bike tour, the 7-kilometre, moderately difficult Naučná stezka okolím Vsetína is suitable. It begins on the bank of the Bečva in Vsetín, includes 13 stops and leads through the Vršky-Díly nature reserve. The terraced slope is considered unique; numerous Central European orchids bloom there, especially in May and June. At the thirteenth and final stop there is a bus stop from which bus routes 1 and 5 run back to the centre.

Another type of route is offered by the approximately 16-kilometre Baťova naučná stezka. At twelve stops, it presents the natural features and sights of this part of Vsacko. For a shorter, level cycling excursion, there is the 3-kilometre Cyklostezka Jasenice. It begins at the car park of Vsetín’s Kaufland and is also suitable for small children. The Naučná stezka Přírodou vsetínských parků educational trail includes 11 stops; information boards explain the natural and aesthetic values of the parks.

Park and Further Local Discoveries

Below Vsetín Castle in Horní město lies the castle park, covering an area of 1 hectare. It complements the more densely built-up historic areas with its own landscape character.
