Růžďka: Nature, Rock Formations and History

Růžďka combines protected meadows, distinctive rock formations, historical traces and paths through a varied landscape. Here, you can combine observing nature with cultural discoveries and choose between short excursions, longer hikes and destinations connected with regional history. Růžďka can be reached by bus from Vsetín and Valašské Meziříčí; it is also possible to travel from the nearest railway station in Bystřička.

Natural Monuments and Rare Plants

The Louky pod Štípou Natural Monument protects remnants of flower-rich meadows with orchids and specially protected plant species. These include the military orchid, common spotted orchid, gladiolus imbricatus and marsh helleborine. Those interested in species-rich wetlands will find another distinctive landscape area in the Lúčky–Roveňky Natural Monument. It lies in the cadastral area of Růžďka, about 1 km below the municipality, and protects wet meadows and slope springs with rare orchids and other rare wetland plants.

The wildlife of Lúčky–Roveňky is also unusually diverse. Rare animals that may occur there include the white-legged damselfly, blue-eyed hawker, red dwarf damselfly, ruddy darter, common toad, fire-bellied toad, fire salamander, sand lizard, viviparous lizard and slow worm.

The Růžděcký Vesník Natural Monument lies on the eastern edge of the settlement of the same name. It protects a juniper pasture; at the same time, Růžděcký Vesník is a former juniper pasture on a slope situated between forests. The flower-rich meadows are home to a large population of the heath spotted orchid. This location therefore complements the wet meadows and slope springs of Lúčky–Roveňky with a distinctly different type of landscape.

Rocks, an Educational Trail and Special Destinations

The Žaba rock formation in the cadastral area of Růžďka is considered a tourist destination and offers extensive views of the surrounding area. Access leads from the Růžďka Municipal Office or from the terminus along a local road to the Dušná guesthouse, followed by approximately 1 km along a forest path.

For a longer hiking stage, the Klenov Educational Trail is documented with a length of 7 km. Another destination is the Poledník Obelisk: from the Růžďka Municipal Office, it is approximately 3 km away on foot via unmarked local paths. The red hiking trail and cycling routes 6018 and 6119 run at the site. The approximately 3 m-high obelisk has an opening through which a ray of sunlight passes at a specific time; this time is marked on the obelisk as a calendar. The site thus combines specific route orientation with an unusual local detail.

Church, Monument and Local Tradition

The present-day Church of Saint Bartholomew was built in 1807. Its wooden main altar was created in 1891 at the School of Woodworking in Valašské Meziříčí. The painting of Saint Bartholomew was created in 1878 by the painter Schindler from Vsetín. Visitors who would also like to experience historic interiors and craft details during their stay will find several clearly distinguishable elements from different periods here.

The local history also includes a monument erected in 1927 to the Evangelicals murdered in 1777. Another distinctive feature is the production of knives, especially Křivák knives: it was Růžďka’s most widespread form of home-based work. The church, monument and knife-making tradition thus offer different ways of exploring the history of the place.
