Discover Uherské Hradiště

Uherské Hradiště combines urban history, archaeological evidence, regional folk culture and protected nature within a compact thematic area. If you are looking for more than a single excursion destination on your trip, you can switch between historical exhibitions, sites connected with Great Moravian history, art, seasonal customs and experiences in Rochus. The water park also complements the city’s cultural offerings with swimming and relaxation facilities.

Urban history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century

The permanent exhibition “Uherské Hradiště – město královské” presents the most important events in the city’s history since its foundation in 1257. The Expozice dějin města offers a different perspective: a virtual tour shows what Uherské Hradiště looked like in 1670. The historical tour therefore provides both a view of the city’s long-term development and a specific look at its appearance in the early modern period. The Expozice Věznice Uherské Hradiště is located in the attic of the Reduta, not in the prison building. It is not wheelchair accessible. Photographs and Czech-language text panels there tell stories from the history of the prison during the totalitarian Nazi and Communist regimes. This clear distinction in terms of location and content is important for your planning, especially if you would like to combine several exhibitions.

Great Moravian traces and living folk culture

The Výšina sv. Metoděje archaeological site comprises the remains of a significant church complex from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. Around the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries, Christian missionaries built one of the first stone churches north of the Danube here. The site is freely accessible; you can see a reconstructed ground plan of the church buildings and an information panel about the history and significance of the site. The Skanzen Rochus in Uherské Hradiště-Mařatice presents folk architecture, including an original wooden barn relocated from Břestek and several farmsteads. In terms of content, the open-air museum conveys the ethnography of the Dolňácko region around Uherské Hradiště: traditional architecture, forms of housing, ways of working and living, clothing, customs and folkloric forms of expression. Recurring customs and seasonal events take place throughout the year, including Fašank, Easter, the erection of the maypole, the opening of the pastures, the harvest, the pilgrimage and the St. Stephen’s carol singing.

Rochus between landscape and biodiversity

Rochus Park has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2005. Its natural character can also be described through the biodiversity documented there: more than 100 bird species and 50 butterfly species live in the park. Rochus thus complements the open-air museum’s cultural and historical themes with an independent landscape and nature aspect.

Art, guided tours with commentary and aquatic experiences

The Joži Uprka Gallery displays representative works from the collections of Nadace Moravské Slovácko, Národní galerie v Praze, Moravská galerie v Brně, Galerie výtvarného umění v Olomouci, Krajská galerie ve Zlíně and Římskokatolická farnost ve Strážnici. On the last Saturday of each month, you can take part in a guided tour with commentary through the exhibition, accompanied by a curator. Aquapark Uherské Hradiště offers swimming and leisure pools, saunas and relaxation areas. This allows you to expand your selection of historical and artistic stops with time spent in the water, sauna and relaxation facilities without abandoning the thematic focus of your trip. When looking for suitable accommodation in Uherské Hradiště, you can therefore clearly define your preferred focus: urban history and exhibitions, Great Moravia and folk culture, Rochus and nature, or art and the water park. For further research, you can also look at Prakšice, Vyškovec, Tupesy, Podolí, Salaš U Velehradu, Pitín, Kunovice and Veletiny.
