Komňa combines the memory of Jan Amos Komenský with quiet trails, historic houses and living Moravian traditions. If you would like to combine culture, landscapes and a range of excursion ideas during your stay, the town offers several clearly distinct points of interest.

In the Footsteps of Jan Amos Komenský

The Poutnické místo in Myší húšť is a place for rest and reflection. The route there is lined with six stations featuring quotations from Jan Amos Komenský. Another important stop is the monument to J. A. Komenský. It was opened in 1992 in a listed granary. The exhibition there is accessible on request; it is recommended to call at least one day in advance.

The Obydlí zvěrokleštiče also tells the story of a special part of the town’s history. The listed house dates from 1850 and houses an exhibition about zvěrokleštičství, a craft that was once widespread but has since died out. Access to the exhibition is also available on request. Allow at least one day’s notice when calling.

Easy Trails and Historic Traces

For a walk with only minor changes in elevation, the Naučná stezka Koménka educational trail is a suitable choice. It begins at Nový Světlov Castle and ends in Komňa. Its route follows the Koménka stream through the surrounding floodplain meadows. In addition to the local exhibitions, this provides a longer connection between the castle, the stream and Komňa.

Another direction leads to the remains of Zuvačov Castle. Zuvačov was a Gothic castle and was already described as abandoned in 1517. The remains lie about 1.5 km east of Komňa on an isolated hill. A footpath with simple steps made from wooden logs has been created to provide access.

Church, Quarries and Landscape

The Church of St. James the Elder is another feature of the townscape. The Empire-style building was constructed between 1842 and 1846. The natural monument Lom Rasová, 2.5 km southeast of Komňa, provides a different landscape setting. It is a disused sandstone quarry, partly filled with water, where endangered plant and animal species can be found.

Modrá voda is another small flooded quarry near Komňa. The site can be reached either directly from Komňa or from Motorest Rasová via a green-marked trail. This allows you to choose different priorities when selecting your accommodation and planning your days: historic interiors and local history, a trail with only minor changes in elevation, or the landscape of former quarries.

Traditions Throughout the Year

In July, Komňa hosts the Komenské hody around St. James’ Day on the 25th. They are held on the nearest weekend or on a weekend determined by the priest. On Saturday, the Komňané brass band and the Podšable folklore ensemble jointly stage a costumed church-fair procession with a “právo”.

Another tradition is observed in February or March: Fašank. Today, it always takes place on the preceding Saturday and is marked by a sword dance. This sword dance has survived in only three municipalities in Moravian Slovakia. The two festivals give Komňa its own cultural profile at different times of the year, while the monument, church, castle site and landscape keep the town’s history permanently visible.
