Discover Hostějov

Hostějov is an interesting destination if you would like to combine landscapes, hiking and local history. The village does not offer one single, all-encompassing attraction, but rather several distinct discoveries: a historic chapel, stone crosses at the entrance, before the municipal boundary and at the edge of the village towards Osvětimany, viticulture history, a traditional event and a hilly landscape with far-reaching views.

Hilly Landscape and Hiking

The area around Hostějov is characterised by the hilly landscape of the Kyjov Uplands. These lie between the Chřiby mountain range and the floodplain of the Morava River. Hostějov’s location offers views over practically half of South Moravia, giving a stay a distinctly scenic character.

The surroundings of Hostějov are suitable for hiking. A green-marked hiking trail passes through the cadastral area. This allows you to get to know the village not only through its buildings, but also by walking through the hilly surroundings. This creates a clear succession of views, landscapes and the cultural and historical traces found in the village.

Chapel and Religious Monuments

The most important monument in Hostějov is a four-sided stone chapel with a bell tower, a small altar and an image of the Mother of God dating from 1866. The chapel was completely reconstructed in 2003 and declared a local monument. Its history thus connects a 19th-century building with a comprehensive renovation in more recent times.

The solemn consecration of the chapel to Mary, Help of Christians, in May 2010 laid the foundation for annual May pilgrimages. Those interested in local traditions will therefore encounter not only a single historic building here, but also a religious practice connected with the village.

Several stone crosses complete this picture. A stone cross dating from 1913 stands at the entrance to Hostějov. A second cross, from 1920, is located before the municipal boundary of Hostějov. At the edge of Hostějov towards Osvětimany stands a third stone cross, dating from 1927. The different locations distribute these historic monuments across the entrance, the municipal boundary and the edge of the village.

Viticulture and Local Tradition

Viticulture is also part of Hostějov’s history. In the 18th century, viticulture developed on the estate; Hostějov had 15 měřic of vineyards. This information places the village within the region’s viticultural history and adds an agricultural aspect to the landscape character of the Kyjov Uplands.

The Štěpánská zábava traditional celebration takes place in Hostějov. Together with the May pilgrimages, this event shows that local identity is expressed not only through monuments, but also through recurring customs and festivals.
