Discover Šelešovice: Landscape, History and Trails

Šelešovice combines a clearly distinctive landscape with an unusually large number of traces from the past. The village lies on a gentle slope descending towards the valley of the Kotojedka, also known as the Olšinka. At the same time, a railway line, a 13.6-kilometre route and archaeological evidence lead through various chapters of the village’s history. Landscape and Access

The Kotojedka reaches Šelešovice flowing eastwards. Within the territory of Šelešovice, a stream also flows into the Kotojedka from the right. The stream in question is not culverted between Cetechovice and Šelešovice.

Šelešovice railway station is located on line 305 between Kroměříž and Zborovice and is integrated into the public transport system. Ticket inspection or ticket sales at Šelešovice railway station take place on the train.

Archaeological and Historical Traces

The first written mention of Šelešovice dates from 1349. The archaeological evidence reaches even further back. Finds from Šelešovice include a small bronze dagger from the Middle Danubian Tumulus Culture. Several graves from the Hallstatt period of the Lusatian culture have also been preserved in Šelešovice. A burial ground in the cadastral area of Šelešovice provides evidence of Slavic settlement. The archaeological site “Pod rozdíly” is identified as a settlement from phase MMK II.

The later history of the village is likewise connected with visible or documented reminders of the past. Šelešovice once had a small fortress, which has not survived. In 1920, a stone obelisk was erected as a memorial beside the district road. From 1838 onwards, a procession was held on 19 June from Šelešovice to the chapel in Nětčice in memory of a major fire. The timing is important here: this is a matter of recorded history, not a statement about a present-day event.

The Šelešovický poklad and the History of Trade

A particularly detailed chapter of the village’s history is the Šelešovický poklad. It was found in an undeveloped part of Šelešovice. The coins in the hoard were located near the historic Hradská cesta trade route, which led from the lower to the middle Pomoraví region. The find therefore points to a regional connection extending beyond the immediate village area, without implying that it represents a present-day route or current trade route.

The Šelešovický poklad contains a total of 342 coins and coin fragments, two small fragments of silver jewellery and a larger quantity of silver bars. It is part of the exhibition “Historie ukrytá pod dlažbou města” at the Kroměříž Region Museum. A Route over Two Ridges

For a more active stay, a 13.6-kilometre route leads through Zdounky, Nětčice, Šelešovice and Soběsuky. The route crosses two ridges and offers sweeping views of Kroměříž and the surrounding area, the Hostýnské vrchy and, above all, the Chřiby. Alongside the village and archaeological histories, this provides a clearly described hiking option. The route is suitable as a standalone day trip in your travel plans, while the historical information offers another way to discover Šelešovice.
