Hulín: Romanesque Church History and Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park

Romanesque Traces and Medieval Urban History

The first written mention of the existence of the town of Hulín dates from 1224. At that time, the Bohemian King Přemysl Otakar I came there. The Church of Saint Wenceslas is a particularly important testimony to the early history. It was founded approximately in the first quarter of the 13th century and was originally a single-nave Romanesque building with an apse.

The portal is the main surviving feature of this Romanesque church building. It is considered the most important and valuable surviving element of the remains of the Romanesque Church of Saint Wenceslas. The portal dates from the first half of the 13th century and makes the building history tangible through a specific detail. For visitors who want not only to look at façades but also to understand historical development, this is a particularly accessible focal point.

Hulín’s further medieval development can also be traced through its fortification history. Under Dětřich, Bruno’s representative, Hulín’s administrative center was extensively rebuilt around the 1290s. The stronghold was converted into a castle, and the entire complex was given ramparts and a moat. Thus, the church adds a second perspective to the history of the place: in Hulín, sacred architecture and medieval administration belong to different but clearly recognizable chapters.

Nature at Zámeček and in the Nature Park

The landscape around Hulín offers a contrast to the historic buildings. The Zámeček forest and the adjacent ponds belong to Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park. The forest is home to large old oak trees, while the nature park in the wider area around Hulín is home to up to 270 bird species, including resident breeding birds and migratory birds. Thus, the nature theme extends from distinctive trees to a species-rich birdlife.

Hulín railway station is also relevant for orientation in the area: it is located on lines 303 Kojetín–Valašské Meziříčí and 330 Přerov–Břeclav.

Traditions, Film and Summer Events

Hulín also has a strong tradition of events. The traditional Svatováclavské hody took place in Hulín on September 28 and are held there every year. Their program includes a traditional fair at the Hulín swimming pool, taking place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All sports activities and attractions at the Hulín swimming pool are included in the admission price.

For cultural evenings, the summer cinema in Mezivodí Park in Hulín screens films of various genres. The summer cinema in Hulín was in its 59th season. In summer, the Městské kulturní centrum Hulín also organizes the traditional Hulínské hudební léto. A program card is available at the Hulín Information Center during opening hours.
