Discover Věžky through its specific buildings and the history of its park. The Neoclassical castle, St. Elizabeth’s Church and garden themes give the town a range of cultural features. If you are looking for accommodation in Věžky, you can first consider whether architecture, park history or a planned exhibition will shape your stay.

Castle and Park: History in Several Layers

The park’s history began before the castle’s: František of Wiessenburg laid out the grounds at the beginning of the 19th century. In the middle of the century, the Weissenburkové built Věžky Castle in place of a Baroque building. It is Neoclassical and has a castle chapel. The castle and park ensemble therefore brings together different architectural and landscape-design periods.

The park’s later history also has a botanical dimension. At the end of the 19th century, the Redlich family established a small dendrological garden there, with numerous labelled exotic trees and shrubs. Dendrological means relating to trees and shrubs. One of the park’s largest trees is a commemorative tree measuring 29 metres tall, with a trunk circumference of 650 centimetres; future tree measurements may vary these figures slightly.

Garden Exhibitions and Their Local History

From 1976, the castle grounds served as the venue for nationwide garden exhibitions organised by the local horticultural association. Since 2013, the municipality has organised the garden exhibitions itself, and the venue has moved from the castle to the park. The history thus covers both the earlier venue and the later municipal organisation.

A garden and hobby fair is held in the castle park. Garden products include flowers, plants and gardening tools; the selection may change from one edition to the next. If you would like to include the exhibition in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

St. Elizabeth’s Church and Its Memorial Sites

St. Elizabeth’s Church was built by Gustav Redlich between 1902 and 1904 in the Neoclassical style and was solemnly consecrated on 6 November 1904. In front of its entrance stand a stone cross dating from 1915 and a memorial to the victims of the First World War. At the rear, a staircase leads to the crypt of the local nobility and the builder, Gustav Redlich.

The church’s history is therefore reflected in more than the building itself: its construction, consecration, cross, war memorial and crypt point to different aspects of local history. The name Gustav Redlich links the church’s architectural history with the history of the crypt.

More Things to Discover and Choosing Your Accommodation

Šipkovaná ve Věžkách is a local treasure hunt prepared by the Hříběcí hory local action group together with the municipality of Věžky. Another historical point of interest is the James E. Hoffman Memorial in Věžky, on the road between Věžky and Zlobice. Together with the castle, church and park, it broadens the range of themes you can consider when planning your trip.

If you are more interested in a local treasure hunt or a memorial, you can also include these in your plans. If your stay is centred around the exhibition, checking the specific dates is part of your preparation.
