Discover Bařice-Velké Těšany

Bařice-Velké Těšany combines impressive cultural monuments with small natural attractions and trails through the Chřiby landscape. The windmill in Velké Těšany is particularly characteristic: it was declared a national cultural monument in 2014 and has been open to the public since 1979. Windmill, Chapels and Memorial Sites

The windmill stands on the southern slope above the village, near the Chvaletiny forest and about 200 m from the road to the neighbouring municipality of Vrbky. Velké Těšany is also home to the Chapel of Saint Florian. It was completed in 1926, dedicated to Saint Florian and is now used for regular religious ceremonies. Every year around Saint Florian’s Day, it also serves as the centre of the local parish festivities.

In front of the chapel, a war memorial erected in 1946 commemorates the local residents who fell in the First and Second World Wars. On the road to Těšnovice, another memorial site stands beneath a stone cross dating from 1851: victims of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and of cholera in Velké Těšany are buried there.

Bařice also has several noteworthy religious and historical sites. The chapel there is a listed building dating from 1909. It was built on the site of an older wooden bell tower and consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on 24 October 1909. Every year on the second Saturday in June, a mass with an accompanying programme takes place there. The statue Panny Marie na Potokách was consecrated on 13 June 1920 and restored in 2010. The cemetery cross from 1922 is dedicated to the local residents who fell in the First World War. A repaired cross dating from 1904 was ceremonially consecrated on 3 October 1999 in a park at the lower end of the village.

Walks and Nature in the Surrounding Area

The memorial lime tree of Velké Těšany is registered as a protected tree and stands on the road to Těšnovice. It is a popular destination for walks and a place to rest. Those looking for a natural complement to the cultural sites will find the protected natural monument Obora nearby, about 1 km north of Velké Těšany. It lies on the gently wooded slope of the hill of the same name, which is also called Hvězda.

West of Velké Těšany lies Skalka u Trňáku, a sun-exposed grass slope on the edge of the Chřiby hills. This nearby destination can be reached from Velké Těšany via a field path towards the crossroads near Zlámanka and then onwards towards Drahlov. This offers a different kind of excursion from a tour of the chapels and memorial sites.
