Střížovice – Nature, Trails and Local Culture

Střížovice lies on the right bank of the March, where the Upper Moravian Plain transitions into the Chřiby Hills. Nature between the March and the Chřiby Hills

Bašnov is a characteristic natural area. The protected natural monument lies in the cadastral territory of Střížovice, approximately 0.3 km south-southeast of the village, in a shallow depression in the March floodplain. Bašnov protects the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), a species of European importance, and its habitat. Bašnov is particularly notable as a habitat for the fire-bellied toad, without this implying any specific visitor facilities or current accessibility.

Approximately 0.7 km southeast of Střížovice is also the Střížovice Site of Community Importance under the European network. It is located on the left side of the road from Střížovice to Kvasice and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. This gives trip planning a clear connection with nature: in addition to the transition to the Chřiby landscape, the surroundings of the village include two protected areas with different designations. Střížovice also offers views of the nearby Chřiby mountain range.

Hiking and Cycling for Different Levels of Interest

A 12 km hiking trail begins in Střížovice. This provides concrete guidance for anyone who would like to combine a stay with a longer hike. The Stezky severními Chřiby trail network is an additional option. There you will find information panels with maps, historical information and local sights, as well as tourist signposts, viewpoints and benches.

The Stezky severními Chřiby trails are primarily intended for hiking. However, most routes can also be ridden by mountain bike and are additionally suitable for running or Nordic walking. For a cycling trip, the section between Kroměříž, Střížovice and Kvasice is also relevant: it forms part of the EuroVelo 9 system.

Local History and Small Discoveries

There are also several specific points of interest in the village itself. In front of the municipal office stands a monument to the citizens of Střížovice who fell in the First World War. It was erected in 1921 and connects local history with a clearly identifiable place in the village.

Kříž na Hrázi is a sandstone cross with a crucifix and corpus on a pedestal. The body of the martyred Christ and the inscription INRI are depicted on the cross. During the procession through the village, the Hrkači stopped here to pray. This connection with local tradition gives the monument a cultural significance that goes beyond its material description.

The statue of Saint Florian stands in the village square of Střížovice. It is probably considered a Baroque monument and is 276 cm high overall. At the same time, it is registered as a protected object in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments under number 34454/7–6157. The statue is another point of interest for a tour of the village.
