Eš – Ponds, architectural heritage and cycling route

EÅ¡ combines a multifaceted local history with ponds, watercourses and distinctive examples of rural architectural heritage. The first written mention of EÅ¡ dates back to 1415. Those looking for a place to stay with specific historical details, connections to nature and a signposted cycling route will find several different points of interest here to incorporate into their own travel plans.

Ponds, stream and protected meadows

A defining landscape feature is the two ponds that the municipality of Eš has directly within the village. Kovárník is one of them. Both ponds are regularly stocked and fished out. This aquatic landscape is complemented by an unnamed stream that flows from Skalický rybník through Eš and then continues through four smaller ponds.

About 0.5 km west of Eš lies the Kejtovské louky natural monument, in the immediate vicinity of the village. It protects a naturally meandering watercourse as well as species-rich wet and peat meadows. The protected features also include specially protected plant and animal species. When choosing travel experiences, this place offers a clear contrast to the built-up village centre: here, the watercourse, wet meadows and peat areas take centre stage. The watercourse in Kejtovské louky meanders naturally; by contrast, the two ponds in the village are regularly stocked and fished out.

Historical traces in the village

The Neo-Gothic Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene dates from 1866 and was consecrated on 22 July 1866. Several buildings in Eš preserve historic façades from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. A notable architectural detail is farmhouse No. 20: the reconstructed wooden house was restored in accordance with its original form and construction technique.

The Boží muka wayside shrine also stands on Road II/128 in Eš. Its inscription commemorates the missing Václav Mareš from Eš. This detail makes the shrine a specific part of the village’s history, while the chapel, façades and farmhouse reveal different periods and forms of the built heritage.

Orientation for cycling and exploring the village

EÅ¡ lies 5 km south of Pacov. Road II/128 runs through the village; at the same time, the route between Lukavec and Pacov along this road is signposted as a cycling route and passes through EÅ¡. The location along the road and the historic sites in the village offer various ways to shape your stay around the landscape, local history or a cycling trip.

The protected zone of Kámen Castle also includes plots of land in the cadastral areas of Kámen, Eš, D. Voda and Věžná.
