Stonework with unusual exhibits

The stonework exhibition in Mrákotín tells the story of the municipality and the development of stonework, both past and present. The documented topics include the production and transport of the monolith for Prague Castle and the making of a large stone roller. The exhibition also displays hand tools and machinery, equipment for geologists and explosives used to blast off sections of rock walls.

A wooden shelter roof is particularly illustrative: it was dismantled in a quarry, reduced in size and then rebuilt in the exhibition. There are also tools, unfinished products and protective equipment used by stonemasons. This means that the exhibition goes beyond a general presentation: the objects show how closely craftsmanship, quarry work and the processing of the material were connected.

Church, vicarage and pilgrimage

Another cultural point of interest is the parish church of St. Giles. Originally, it was a Gothic church dating from the 14th century; in 1806–1807, it was remodelled in the Classicist style. The church and vicarage have been documented since 1398, and parish registers have existed since 1661. A pilgrimage to the parish church takes place on the Sunday after the feast day of St. Giles. Protected landscape around the Javořice forest massif

The natural area includes the Horní Mrzatec natural monument and site of European importance. It encompasses the cadastral areas of Mrákotín u Telče and Lhotka u Mrákotína. Horní Mrzatec is a nutrient-poor to moderately nutrient-rich pond with clear water and a sandy bottom on the edge of the extensive Javořice forest massif. As a landscape feature of high aesthetic value, it forms an independent natural point of interest alongside the town’s cultural attractions.

About 3 km northeast of Mrákotín, the Horní Nekolov natural monument protects a beech stand on the southeastern slope of Široký kámen. The protected area lies at elevations of 690 to 772 m.

Hiking and cycling around Mrákotín

For a longer hike, the 18 km route from Mrákotín via Bradlo and Hradisko, taking about 5.5 hours, starts in Mrákotín. It follows the yellow-marked hiking trail via Dobrá Voda and returns to the vicinity of Mrákotín. One section reaches the 760 m-high Hradisko rock massif, which offers views of the surrounding landscape. The terrain is rocky in places and includes steep climbs; the route should therefore be regarded primarily as a full day of hiking with clearly changing terrain.

The connection from Mrákotín to Javořice can also be covered by bicycle via cycle route No. 1113. This makes it possible to view hiking and cycling as different ways of exploring the landscape without excluding the town’s cultural attractions from the itinerary.

A small local tradition

In the centre of Mrákotín, a soft-serve ice cream stand offers four flavours every day. It is popular with locals and day-trippers and forms part of an excursion programme. This small, specific glimpse adds an everyday meeting place in the town to the major themes of stone, church and nature.
