Discover Pavlov: Church, Hills and Wetland

Pavlov brings together culture, open landscapes and special opportunities for observing nature within a compact area. Here, you can discover a church documented since the Middle Ages, a hill offering views across the surrounding area, a wetland shaped by earlier clay extraction and paths leading to a river source. This gives the town a range of starting points for an excursion: historical details for curious explorers, landscape experiences, and designated routes for cyclists and hikers.

The Church of St. Vitus and Pavlov’s History

A cultural focal point is the Church of St. Vitus in Pavlov. It has been documented since 1365 and was probably originally Gothic. Its present form was created by a Baroque rebuilding carried out between 1772 and 1775. The church also contains a death bell dating from 1799. The different phases of its development make the building a place where older history and the later Baroque transformation can be seen clearly.

Vostrážka and the Hliniště Wetland

Vostrážka lies on the route from Pavlov to Bezděkov, a hill offering views of the surrounding landscape. In good visibility, Slavonice can be seen from there. If, during your stay, you would like to experience not only the town centre but also the character of the surrounding landscape, this site offers a distinctly different experience from the church.

Another separate nature-related feature is Hliniště on the northeastern edge of the municipality of Pavlov near Stonařov. This scientifically important wetland contains dozens of small ponds. They were formed by earlier clay extraction for so-called Vepřovice, meaning unfired bricks. Part of Hliniště can be accessed via unpaved paths that are maintained only as part of the usual summer mowing. Entry is possible at your own risk and is otherwise unrestricted. These details are important for practical orientation on site and distinguish Hliniště from a regularly developed excursion destination.

Cycling and Paths to the Source of the Moravská Dyje

A cycle route passes through Pavlov. A separate destination for hikers and cyclists is the source of the Moravská Dyje. The river rises in the Brtnická vrchovina landscape area in the Jihlava region, not far from the municipality of Stajiště. The source can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail. Cyclists turn off Route 5091 and reach it after 200 metres.

A green-marked hiking trail also runs by the Pouště tourist signpost. From there, a path leads to the source of the Moravská Dyje. In the other direction, the path from the Pouště tourist signpost passes the Na Pouštích ponds and leads into the Velký Špičák area. This allows you to choose between a route to the source and a landscape route featuring ponds and the Velký Špičák area.
