Hladov – Valley, Water and Trails in the Brtnická vrchovina

Hladov lies in a shallow valley along the upper course of the Hladovský potok in the central part of the Brtnická vrchovina. Watercourses, a landscape of ponds, forests and historical traces define a place where natural and cultural interests can be easily combined. Valley, Headwaters and Landscape

The headwaters of the Hladovský potok extend into an upland landscape. The Hladovský rybník lies east of Hladov; west of the village, Nad Hladovským rybníkem is registered as a significant landscape feature. These two references show different sides of the surroundings: The pond is an immediate part of the village setting, while the registered landscape west of Hladov represents a distinct natural area.

The wooded areas are also a defining part of the municipality. The cadastral area of Hladov contains extensive forests, particularly around Veselský vrch.

Orientation for Trails and Excursions

Road I/38, a first-class road running from Jihlava to Znojmo, passes through Hladov. This connection is part of the village’s geographical orientation and helps place Hladov within the regional road network. Cycling route 5092 is also relevant for cyclists: It runs along the edge of Hladov’s cadastral area and leads from Hodice to Stará Říše. The route is therefore a separate point of reference for travel planning, without its course being equated with the village centre.

Chapel and Traces of Local History

One notable cultural feature is the Chapel of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Hladov. The Neo-Gothic building was developed according to plans originating from Professors Welzl and Dvořák of the Industrial School in Brno. The chapel’s history also includes a new bell, which was consecrated on 31 August 2008. In addition to its natural features, the village thus offers a specific building through which its architectural and local history can be traced.

Further historical connections extend beyond Hladov. Hladov paid tithes to the Premonstratensian monastery in Nová Říše. The region’s culinary and monastic history is also connected with the village: At the edge of Hladov, Novoříšské Klášterní pivo was brewed in a brewery according to a recipe attributed to the monks of the monastery in Nová Říše; the first batch was tasted.

There are five crosses in Hladov and its surroundings. One of them is the cross of Jan Veselý, a legionnaire. Such individual testimonies complement the broader history of the chapel, the monastery connection and the landscape with personal and local places of remembrance.
