Discover Kamenice: History, Trails and Local Culture

Kamenice lies approximately 18 kilometres east of Jihlava and combines historical monuments with marked hiking trails, a natural monument and regional craft culture. If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activities during your stay, you will find various points of interest here: from the museum in the Renesanční tvrz to Romanesque and Late Gothic churches and brewing culture.

Renaissance and Sacred Architecture

The Renesanční tvrz acquired its present appearance through a renovation in the mid-16th century. Its façade is decorated with late-16th-century sgraffito. Today, the Renesanční tvrz serves as a museum and can be visited by prior arrangement. This makes it suitable for a deliberately planned cultural visit combining architectural history and a museum experience.

The Kostel sv. Jakuba Většího preserves a Late Romanesque core and a southern Romanesque portal. In the second half of the 15th century, the church received a new Gothic presbytery with a chancel arch. Fragments of Late Gothic paintings of a rustic character have been preserved on the walls of the nave. In addition, the Kaple sv. Anny represents small-scale central-plan sacred architecture in a rustic setting from around 1730; to this day, it is used mainly for weekday services because it is more accessible. Together, the churches display Romanesque, Gothic and Late Gothic architectural and furnishing features; the Kaple sv. Anny complements this overview with a central-plan sacred form dating from around 1730.

Marked Trails and Nature

Two hiking routes with different courses are central to finding your way around. The green-marked hiking route from Krahulov to Stáj passes through the municipality of Kamenice. The red-marked hiking route from Čeřínek to Třebíč runs along the western edge of Kamenice’s cadastral area and leads predominantly through the Jihlava valley. The Prosenka natural monument is also located within the municipality, adding an independent natural attraction to the hiking routes.

Traditions and Local Brewing Culture

The Kamenická svatojakubská pouť offers open monuments and artistic workshops. At the Kaplička sv. Marka, also known as the Kaplička sv. Jana Nepomuckého, the tradition of processions and prayers for favourable weather and a good harvest was revived on the occasion of the Feast of Saint Mark. The Atelier Keramika U slunečních hodin occasionally opens its premises to individual and group visitors as well as for creative workshops. The Kamenický pivovar MadCat is located in a former cooperative distillery building dating from 1912, which was saved in 2018 and converted into a modern craft brewery. Guided brewery tours with tastings directly from the storage tanks add to the local experience.
