Discover Kryry: Church, Observation Tower and Historic Trails

Kryry combines sacred architectural history, the memory of a castle that has disappeared and special destinations for walks and hikes. Here you can discover a church of Gothic origin, an observation tower at the site of a former castle and the historic Stations of the Cross Křížová cesta Kryry. A recurring hiking event is also part of the documented history of the town.

Church and Castle Hill as Historical Reference Points

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Kryry is originally a Gothic church dating from 1400–1418. In 1722, it was brought into its present form; further changes followed in 1780 and in the 19th century. Its location on a slight rise below the castle hill, next to a disused cemetery, gives the building a clear historical setting. Its features include a square western tower and a vaulted interior.

Kryry Castle was also known as Kozí Hrady and adds an older, now vanished era to this picture. From 1320 to 1348, it belonged to Albrecht of Kryry from the Lords of Rvenice dynasty. From 1374 onward, it was an appurtenance of Petrohrad Castle, owned by the Lords of Janovice; by the 15th century at the latest, it had disappeared. The church stands below the castle hill, while the tower is located at the former castle site; the two points therefore belong to different parts of the same historical setting.

The Schillerova Observation Tower

The Schillerova Observation Tower was built in 1905–1906 at the site of the former Kozihrady Castle. The observation tower has viewing platforms at heights of 22 and 27 metres. This means that the historic site is home to a structure that connects the memory of the former castle with much later tower architecture.

During the spring, summer and autumn months, the Schillerova Observation Tower is currently open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Trails and Events in Kryry

The Stations of the Cross Křížová cesta Kryry was created in 1764 and is approximately 840 metres long. The approximate length gives you an initial indication for planning the time needed for this section of the trail. Havraní stopa provided another link between local history and physical activity: on 25 April 2026, the town of Kryry and the Kryry Health Club organised the tourist march. Registration began at 9:00 a.m., and the march started at 9:30 a.m.

Havraní stopa was held in Kryry as the 30th edition of a hiking event through the surrounding area. The route followed forest paths and passed by the Schillerova Observation Tower.
