Smolnice between Cultural History and Džbán

Smolnice is a destination for you if you would like to combine Czech local history with a marked hiking route and a location on the border of Přírodní park Džbán. Sacred architecture, villa architecture, traces of early settlement and local events create a varied picture for planning your trip.

Historical Sites and Periods

Kostel sv. Bartoloměje in Smolnice is an immovable cultural monument. The first written mention dates from 1355; its present form probably dates back to a renovation around 1700. In the cemetery around the church stands a sarcophagus of the Lukáš family, designed in 1878 according to a design by A. Wiehl. The period from 1355 to the probable renovation around 1700 connects early local history with the later form of the church site.

The architecture associated with Antonín Wiehl is also part of the character of the village. The Baroque farmstead in Smolnice was redesigned in Neo-Renaissance forms in 1886 and decorated with sgraffiti based on designs by Mikoláš Aleš, a relief frieze by Josef Václav Myslbek, and casts of two Myslbek medallions. The Wiehlova vila in Smolnice was built as a Neo-Renaissance villa in 1898. It features sgraffiti, four large ceramic medallions with antique motifs and a richly carved wooden balcony. When viewing the Baroque farmstead, you move between the overall impression and the details: the sgraffiti, relief frieze and medallions create different accents in the architecture.

The history reaches back even further: Smolnice is home to a Neolithic settlement of the Linear Pottery culture; finds from this culture have been documented throughout the municipality. On 23 May 1420, several thousand mounted and foot soldiers from the area around Louny, Žatec and Slaný also gathered at Táborec near Smolnice before setting out together for Prague. The Neolithic settlement broadens the view beyond the visible buildings and connects local history with a much earlier period.

Landscape and Trails

Smolnice lies on the border of Přírodní park Džbán, designated in 1994. A green-marked hiking trail runs through Smolnice and connects Vinařice, Smolnice and Brloh. If you would like to include culture and a hike in the same trip plan, this specific route provides clear orientation between several places. Public transport in Smolnice is based on bus connections. The routes are fixed, and the stops cover the built-up part of the village.

Music and Local Events

The “Hudba ve Smolnici” concert series offers regular concerts featuring classical and sacred music by Czech and international composers. The traditional public afternoon festival Pichlovanka was also scheduled to take place at the Smolnice Cultural Centre on 7 June 2026.
