Deštnice – Džbán Nature Park and Hop-Growing History

Deštnice combines the landscape of Džbán Nature Park with an unusually vivid history of hop growing and agriculture. The town is surrounded by extensive coniferous and mixed forests, interrupted by fields and hop gardens. This brings together nature observation, a rural cultural landscape, and historical landmarks within a compact thematic area.

Church and Local History

A prominent cultural and historical landmark is the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, a late Baroque building dating from 1783. It has a single nave and a rectangular layout, with a semicircular apse. The main altar was originally designed in the Rococo style and was remodelled in the 19th century. Hop Museum and Research Tradition

The Hop Museum is located in Deštnice in a farm complex and in a former hop kiln. It presents the history of the hop research station since 1926, as well as a photo gallery documenting work in hop growing. The collection includes technical equipment, an original furnace, and hop labels for the quarter. The exhibition thus brings together buildings, work processes, and technical evidence of regional agriculture.

The history of hops in Deštnice goes back further: their cultivation is documented in records from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. After European vineyards were destroyed by phylloxera, hops remained the most important crop in Deštnice. Records from the 18th and 19th centuries ranked them among the highest-quality hops in the entire region.

A breeding station for grain and hops was established in Deštnice in 1925. From 1 January 1926, Karel Osvald led the breeding work at the agricultural experimental station; under his direction, the first selection work on hops began in 1927. Through the selective breeding of his hop clones, the quality of Czech hops was stabilised. Three hop clones for different soil types bear the name Dr Osvald.

Hiking Trail and Technical Features

A blue-marked hiking trail from Veletice railway station via Pravda to Líšťany runs through Sádek, a district of Deštnice. Those wishing to combine nature with regional history will find an illustrative way to experience the landscape along this route. Deštnice also has two bridges built one above the other among its technical features: a road bridge over a stream, with a railway bridge above it.

The municipality also contains a railway underpass in the railway embankment; the relevant section of the line dates from 1870. The underpass is a small viaduct tunnel 1 m wide. It supports the railway line while also directing water from a woodland plot through the tunnel into a ravine. Southeast of Deštnice lay the vanished settlement of Nedvídkov (Nedvíkov or Medvídkov), with a fortress and a manorial farmstead. It disappeared during the 15th century under the rule of the Lobkowicz family.
