Petrohrad: Castle, Chapel and Paths through Háj Petra Bezruče

Petrohrad combines a distinctive history with paths through parks and woodland. Above the municipality stands the ruin of Petrohrad Castle on a wooded rocky spur, while the Chapel of All Saints, Petrohradský Park and Háj Petra Bezruče offer very different ways to experience culture, views and the landscape. Castle and Chapel as Defining Places

The ruin of Petrohrad Castle stands on a wooded rocky spur above the municipality of Petrohrad. Petr of Janovice is said to have built the castle at the end of the 14th century. The castle hill is therefore not only a visible part of the locality, but also a setting for medieval history. The Chapel of All Saints complements this historical focus in an unusual way: It was built after the model of the ancient Maria Rotunda, or the Roman Pantheon.

Count Heřman Černín z Chudenic had the Chapel of All Saints built on “Zámecký vrch” as a lasting memorial to his rescue. There is a viewpoint by the chapel. From there, the view extends across the Ústí nad Labem, Karlovy Vary, Plzeň and Central Bohemian regions. This allows you to combine a visit to the chapel with a wide view across several regions without losing sight of the building’s cultural distinctiveness.

Paths through Park and Woodland

The chapel is located in the old part of Petrohrad. The stone-lined forest path Cesta českých svatých leads there and continues as a hiking trail. As an educational trail, Cesta českých svatých leads from Petrohrad through Háj Petra Bezruče to the summit with the Chapel of All Saints. For orientation purposes, this describes a path connecting the locality, the woodland and the chapel site.

Petrohradský Park was created at the end of the 18th century by Jan Rudolf Černín. The walk through the park is signposted with tourist markings, freely accessible and allows you to put together your own circular route. This means you can treat the park as an independent item on your itinerary or include it in a longer exploration of Petrohrad.

For different walking and running plans, the Stezka zdraví in Petrohradský Park offers three signposted circular routes of varying length and difficulty. The documented options include a measured 500-metre route and a 2-kilometre circuit for recreational runners. The two distances provide concrete guidance when planning, while the three different route profiles offer further choice.

Háj Petra Bezruče also has its own distinctive landscape character. It contains granite outcrops accessible via a walkable tourist trail. The woodland is also home to habitats and species of wood-dwelling insects, particularly the beetle Osmoderma barnabita. The site therefore combines geological features with an insight into the wildlife of old habitats.

Climbing and Local Tradition

Petrohradské skály is a popular destination for climbers; bouldering guides are also available there. The focus here is on the rock and active exploration. In contrast, the castle, chapel and park centre on history, views and signposted paths. You can therefore combine these themes according to your preferred pace for the day without having to turn them into a single experience.

The Pivní pochod is part of the local events calendar. On Saturday, 9 May 2026, the second edition of the Pivní pochod, organised by the VEEV association, took place in Petrohrad. This date belongs to the locality’s more recent history and, alongside the historic buildings, shows another community-oriented side of Petrohrad.

Important Information for Your Visit

The Chapel of All Saints is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. from April to September. This time restriction is particularly important for your planning if the chapel itself is to be your main focus. The park walk, by contrast, is freely accessible, while the Stezka zdraví and the paths in Háj Petra Bezruče each offer their own ways of exploring.
